  • Looking up and down when expressing the eyelids..why ?

Strange question when I see my optholomogist or read on the net ..I notice it says to look down when you push on the upperlid and to look up when you do the lower lids?

I never do this ? I just close my eyes which are kept central positioned and massage the lids ...is there a reason why I shouldn't be doing it this way..maybe lookin up and down is supposed to protect the iris ?

Also how delicate are the internal eyelids and structures are they easily damaged?

That's a good quesiton--I think they are just moving the cornea out of the way. It is heavily innervated (and therefore sensitive) and and I guess if there was debris under a lid, you could also abrade the surface. Who knows what the long term effects of pressure/expression will be? Makes sense to go about it carefully. Best wishes, Bill
