  • 1st time visit. doc giving rx w/o asking for records? also against gland expression??

ok i went for a 2nd opinion re: my cauterized tear duct since my eye has been ext dry. this doc isnt a corneal specialist .. anyway, good news-my tear duct is shut. yay! bad news my eye is very dry-prob from sjogrens flare or just flare from the trauma of cautery etc... doesnt take much for my left eye to hurt.

i thought it curious tho this doc said he didnt believe in expressing the glands... thought it did more harm than good. than he wrote our an rx to dry autologus serum with only seeing me for like 5 minute and not looking at my med records the past 4 years.. of course i am not doing this -i will speak with my specialist first.. i know he told me i am not ready for that yet..
my question is does anyone else find it odd for a brand new doc to write an rx for the serum with only seeing the patient one time? also what do you think about his opinion for not expressing glands??? i always feel so much relief when my doc expresses my clogged glands?

opinions comments welcome!! thanks guys and gals!

You mean an rx for autologous serum drops? I think it's ok if he wrote an rx for it without knowing your records too well... assuming you haven't tried serum in a while (or at all), it is highly unlikely to do you any harm, and might help, so why not try it? I think it's great that he's giving your the option to try the serum drops... I was pleasantly surprised with how much of a difference my serum drops made for me.

Regarding gland expressions, haven't studied that issue enough to comment... from what I can tell, gently expressing them with a q-tip as per Dr. L's book probably won't do any harm since it's done so gently... but as for the more forceful expressions, I haven't read enough about that to have a strong opinion one way or the other... hopefully someone else will come along with some advice on that!

Ahhh... didn't know it wasn't possible to get the rx filled. Hopefully your specialist will let you try it!
