  • Umbrella plugs

I had these put into my lowers yesterday. I spoke to the specialists about autologous serum, he said they don't really use this, but do use PRP and would consider giving it a go if plugs didn't work.

One day with plugs and my eyes feel so much better already in terms of dryness/tiredness. However, they rub against my eye with the tiniest movements and my eyes have gotten very red where the plug is obviously rubbing, is this normal?? Should I go in and ask them to take it out? Or will they settle?

I'm tempted to try and get an appointment today and ask them to look at it...

He also mentioned that the PRP serum was made from babies blood not mine - is this normal??

No. Whose baby would that be?

Consult Dr Google 'platelet rich plasma eye drops' http://standardkit.com/download/Symp...h%20Plasma.pdf.

They should be able to fit punctal plugs that don't scrape your eye surface. Maybe go back for adjustment?

Did you see an ophthalmic surgeon or an optometrist? If intervention decisions are needed, it has to be a medically qualified doctor.

So good to hear things are generally improving though.

        Thanks, LM.

The last two weeks have definitely been better. They are slowly healing.

I went in the next day, and the plugs were adjusted, they are much better, although still can feel them at times. Might make another trip if they bother me in a couple of days. I saw a cornea specialist, he was an ophthalmologist.

Who's baby indeed, the make for the link...

        Hope LM is doing OK!!

          Hi DL,

I've had lower plugs in for a while and a few days ago I had the left eye plug replaced. For me my eyes were more irritated for about three days after the plugs were inserted but they calmed down. I was so aware of something lodged in my tear duct (no other way to describe it!) but this settled down too.

The plugs made a big difference for me and I don't touch drops anymore.

Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery. How did you get to the bottom of your problem?

            Hi Claire,

My eyes are now feeling OK with the plugs. Still not amazing, but I can't feel them most of the time. They feel the worse in the morning.

I really haven't gotten to the bottom of my problem, however the stinging which was brought on by steroids drops has definitely reduced. I think it was mainly time. But who knows. They are still dry, but feel more comfortable than 3 months ago.
            How are you?

              Hi DL,

To give you hope my family told me my eyes have come on 'leaps and bounds' since I've had the plugs in. One has come loose so the consultant reinserted it and my left eye feels a bit uncomfortable ATM and has gone pinker.

Emotionally, I am having a 'bad day' but I know it's the depression talking. I'm always fearing my eyes won't go back to how they were, even if they are a little more veiny than the norm I wouldn't mind but they are still v pink and sore looking.

The first day I got my plugs, that same evening, I experienced an episode where my right eye started watering intensely and there was a crazy amount of stinging. I was cleaning my eyes and assumed I got something in it. I've never had this before. My eye went bright red, but after 5 minutes it calmed down.

This was last Thursday. So Tuesday morning, plugs feeling much better. I wake up, open my eyes, and boom, both eyes start watering and sting, the stinging is unbearable. They only feel better when I close my eyes. This lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes. After lying down and closing me eyes they do feel better.

                Any ideas?

I'm so sorry, Claire. I know all to well about the bad days.

I hope it passes quickly. What are you doing for yourself at the moment? Do you have a good ophthalmologist?

Sounds like 'baby' erosions. Has this never happened to you before getting the plugs? Be really careful opening your eyes in the morning... would be a good idea to wet them first.

                      Hi DL,

My plug in the left eye is causing some problems like yours, it stings and looks more inflamed (v depressing - feel like I'm going backwards sometimes!) The plug he put into the left eye was a bigger fit then the right which might be what behind the discomfort.

ATM my routine is to stay off the drops and keep up the eye hygiene! Recovery is so slow though I give up hope at least ten times a day!

I think if the plugs are still irritating you by the end of the week you need to get them checked again. There's different types and sizes that might be more suitable.

I had to laugh! Despite all the pain of dry eyes, there sure are moments of humor. Thanks to you all!!!

                          LM always cracks me up!!!

My plugs are really comfortable today. Even at yoga, all the sideway poses, looking at my hands, no problem!!

Rebecca, I've never experienced anything like it pre-plugs. Do your eyes need to stick or be dry when waking to get erosions? Mine aren't, and while they may be slightly uncomfortable in the morning I've not had eyelids which stick for about 7 months. In fact, now I think about, my eyelids don't even feel gritty anymore.

They haven't for about two weeks now.

I'm being super careful, it was almost as if my tears were burning my eyes. That the tearing was causing the stinging rather than the other way around...

Claire, when did you have plugs. First 4 days were unbearable, now I'm wondering if they gave dropped out as I can't feel then at all. I'm glad I persevered. I was close to having them out on Saturday. I'm hoping they'll help, if somewhere that it can take up to 60/90 days to reverse osmalarity - fingers crossed!!!

Not everybody with erosions has dry eye, so no the eyes don't need to stick or be dry to get erosions. But the symptoms of an erosion are about the same as any other trauma to the epithelium (sudden tearing, sharp pain, sometimes blurred vision). I once had an umbrella plug squeeze out a little and scratch my eye. Hurt like the dickens.

                              Hi DL,

I had my plugs put in two months ago but recently had a new one put in the left eye. It's now been a week and my left eye is still irritated which worries me, but it was the same opth that put it in. How are you doing with yours now DL? Are they helping with the redness. I'm hoping once my left eye calms down it'll start recovering again.
