  • cautery and plug in an eye, will it cause infection?

I have been quadraplugged and had infection. My eye specialist mentioned that cautery will not cause infection since there is no foreign body in the eye. The umbrella plug is a foreign body and dirt accumulates around there, thus causing infection.

Dissolvable 6 monthly plug does not help me. Only 2 permanent plugs in an eye provide me the relief and apparently, caused my 0mm shirmer tested eye to have overflow.

I am wondering will having 1 punctum cauterised and 1 plugged in the same eye caused infection? Has anyone tried this combination before?

    I did!

For over 4 years, I had an umbrella-style plug in my lowers, and my uppers were cauterized - no issues with infection in my case.

Of course, your mileage may vary.
