  • Plugs & Blepharitis.

I suggested to my Optho yesterday that I would like to try plugs. She thought that because of my blepharitis, although mild, it would be a bad idea, as the bacteria might grow.
    What do you all think?

I have a interest in promoting plugs.

The literature is very clear that punctal occlusion can be beneficial to patients with increased osmolarity of the tear film due to low aqueous flow or increased evaporation. I would think as long as you are keeping your lid margins clean punctal occlusion could be beneficial. I am aware of a corneal specialist who uses plugs with his blepharitis patients routinely.

Many doctors do not think that plugs are good for everyone, especially if you have a lot of inflammation (some people might disagree here). But w/ plugs, escentually, you are keeping all the bad inflammatory cells in your eyes, and this can make your eyes feel worse.

Suneet, I think that you have a good doctor who doesn't automatically reach for plugs just because you are a dry eye patient and is thinking through your treatment plan.

My doctor practically forced me to use plugs because it's the only thing left she can think of doing for me, and it's made my eyelids super red and more irritated than usual.

The point: plugs aren't for everyone. But if you really want to try them, opt for some temporary ones to see if it helps.

Inflammation has been a component of my dry eye. I have the plugs and have seen no increase in inflammation.
