  • Restasis with Capped Meibomian Glands

I am excited about this forum and have a second question regarding my current regimen. My issues are blepharitis, particularly of the lower lid margin, and dry eye.

I just started Restasis last night and everything went smoothly with the first application. With all the things I've tried, I'm definitely discouraged, but with each new thing I try, I gain a little hope that it might help.

The eye doctor who prescribed the Restasis also said many of my Meiobiam Glands are capped. There are actually "bubbles" over three or four of them that I can see without magnification. It seems to me like it would be better to solve the capping problem before starting the Restasis as in the prescribing information it looks like Restasis just increases tear production. Is it possible that the Restasis will remove the capping or do I need some sort of procedure to clear the orifices before starting this medication? Can I do this myself or do I need to find a doctor who can do this. I have had trouble finding a doctor who would offer to clear the buildup over the glands.

Or perhaps, capped glands are OK and the Restasis itself with help with the blepharitis and dry eye?

    Thanks!

I dont think restasis helps at all with your meibomian glands. I made the mistake of taking restasis for about a year instead of treating my glands and everything got progressively worse. Just to clarify, I'm not saying Restasis is completely useless, but specifically in regards to your glands. Warm compresses with expressions help but if your glands are completely blocked then it wont be enough. You will need to do treatments of lipiflow or IPL. Many optometrists do not know how to treat meibomian glands. It might be a good idea to get a second opinion. See if you can find a dry eye specialist, even if it means you have to drive a few hours. A good doctor makes a huge difference. Good luck.
