I have recurrent corneal erosions, which at times have been so severe that the erosion covered most of the pupil. When I had the last RCE that severe, my DE specialist put in the type of bandage contact lens which must be replaced every 2 weeks. Apparently there is a type which can be left in somewhat longer, I don't know for how long. I went in to my DE doc initially every week for 14 weeks for her to remove the BCL and check the cornea for degree of healing or perhaps further breakdown, and corneal pressure. The latter is very important to monitor as well, especially when you have RCEs. My specialist works almost exclusively with DED patients now, and is quite expert at inserting them and removing them. With my cornea so fragile and compromised, there is no way I would asked to learn to do it. Nor would she have allowed me to learn to remove it. An amateur at it (like me, if I had been given training) could severely damage the cornea. I had read some threads several places on the forum in which folks had said that if worn more than 2 weeks straight further corneal damage would occur due to lack of oxygen passing through the BCL. I am only sharing my particular experiences. There was no way to not use the BCL for a length of time. The erosion was huge, and previous RCEs I'd had kept getting reopened from the daily friction of the eyelid blinking, despite my using Muro drops, Muro ointment, lubricant gel drops. So because of my previous experiences with RCE healing process, and the size of that particular erosion, there was no choice but to go to the BCL.

I don't know what the recent research (if there is any) has found out about length of wearing time of BCL and resultant rate of healing. And I'm too tired to research it now! Rebecca, do you know if there is any recent research on this? What have been the experiences of others on the forum who have worn BCL?

Sammygirl, how long has your little girl been wearing the BCL that were put in? If they were placed for weeks and not removed, there would be no way to check the eye to assess the healing, corneal pressure, etc. I am so so sorry that she has had to deal with this at such a young age. Do they know what caused her to develop the RCE's?

Hi Sammygirl, You need to talk to Pinklady asap! Send her a PM Did SH put the lenses in on the NHS? Someone needs to manage this very closely. Shutterbug's right - are EG keeping up to the monitoring? I guess every child's different on healing so it needs an experienced paed cornea doc for that question. So happy to hear it's going well. Don't hesitate to 'bother the docs' and get all your questions sorted out in the consultation. If they're not around by phone, email - address it to the Consultant personally 'my daughter, age 2, has been... and I am wondering how long... and what monitoring needs to be done...' It's important not to slip through the gaps and the docs are telling me it helps them if we're more proactive. It's the relaxed and tactful bit I'm working on

I think you are doing something wrong in your food which you give to your two year old kid. Read all my posts you may get some clues. young kids can be treated easily if kid's food is good. (provided you, your spouse, kid's carers understand the method )

does your kid's problem started after some vaccination or any medicines after some (severe) fever?

I understand the early morning or every wake up after sleep problem of your kid. My son also had the problem (still struggle but reduced). It took very long time to get into control. I am sure no doctor going slove this. It is very hard time and should have iron heart to see our kids crying after wake up.

          Hi Sammygirl32,
I have PM'd you too . The eye registrar at my son's last appointment did say if there were no erosions for 6 months then they would think it successful so maybe they want to see if she can manage without the bandage lenses? Hope you get some answers.
