  • [Chalazion, Stye, Blepharitis] My story

    Hi guys,

My name is Daniel, I am 22 years old and I think I have multiple chalazia under my right eye. The reason why I say 'I think' is because still after one and a half years of researching and going to several doctors, I have gotten mixed and vague answers which were not really helpful. Right now, the red and hard swelling in my under eyelid could be one chalazion, multiple chalazia, still a stye or maybe a form of blepharitis? I am even starting to think that it might be just a scar (a hard thick and red scar?) from the several surgeries I have had in the hospital. I will go to the hospital AGAIN this thursday, but let me start by telling my story.

In march 2013, I got a very big swollen and inflamed red spot which covered my whole right eye. I went to the local doctor which said that it will go away on its own and that I should use warm compresses to help decrease the inflammation. It was extremely painful and lasted serveral weeks before it became less. After this, the red swelling that I still have today remained under my eyelid. A different local doctor adviced me to try many eye drops, creams, antibiotic pills etc, but non seem to help. Finally in december, I got sent to the hospital were they investigated my eye. I remember the doctor giving me a piece of paper which said: Blepharitis (Chalazion). I had two small surgeries to remove the remaining dirt out of the chalazion (?). Both of the times, it did not do anything, only leaving me with a lot of pain (and a high bill...)

I could feel that the doctors were starting to get a bit unsure after the second time that the surgery did not have the desired results. They send me away with three packages of antibiotic creme (creme that I had already been using for a long time) and with the advice that I should keep my eyes clean at all times, using warm compresses and the cream (nothing different from what I was already doing).

This is when I started to do a lot of self research. I tried to clean my eye with camille tea, both in the morning and in the evening using an eye bath. I clean my eyes with Blepha Plus cleaning wipes, which do feel quite nice. I have started to take Turmeric pills every day beleiving that the chalazion (I will call it chalazion for now) might be caused by something from the inside. I have tried to clean my eyes with baby shampoo aswell, warm compresses etc, but none seem to really help.

Last but certainly not least, I have treated my eyes for over a month with tea tree oil. This in perticular is the first thing which I noticed that DID make a difference. But there are some downfalls to it. First of all, tea tree oil feels extremely heavy and stingy on the eyes. I applied it during the morning and the evening, but soon already realised that this was way too much, and that the sensitive skin under my eyes could not take it, resulting in more redness and swelling. After applying it only in the evening, combining it with a little bit of warm water (after cleaning my eyes with a warm compress, and Bleph plus wipes) for a month, my chalazion did seem to finally react to something. I would have one really good day, followed by three really bad days. Maybe two good days, followed by still four really bad days. At a certain point I felt that the bad days were getting worse, and last saturday my whole eye was swollen again, reminding me of the time when I first got it. This is when I stopped using tea tree oil.

My chalazion is now back to the way it was. it feels very hard and it does not seem to hurt at all? When a red spot is inflamed, I guess that it is supposed to hurt right? Why is my chalazion not hurting at all? It does not react to anything, it is just there? I now start to think that it might be a form of a scar? But then again, I do have some doubts about that aswell.

Conclusion is, I am completely out of ideas how to get rid of it. I feel that the doctors do not want to help me anymore (they said it is just 'bad luck'). For over a year, I have felt insecurities about my appearance, not wanting to look people in the eye anymore, and hating to get ready in the morning, being confronted by my eye everyday. It is taking up all of my time, and it is just exhausting me.

Thanks for taking your time to read through all of this. I hope it maybe helps someone, or gives some ideas. If anyone has any tips, please let me know. I will keep you guys updated within this thread

    Daniel

Wow, what a story. I'm sorry.

Mind telling us your location? Just in case anyone has a dr. recommendation.

What about these doctors - what kind are they? With this kind of challenge I'd go for a corneal specialist who is well known for their work in meibomian gland disorders. General ophthalmologist, absolutely not. Even a lot of corneal specialists aren't really that great at this stuff.

Do you have or have you ever had any other skin disorders? You know western medicine tends to compartmentalize terribly. Some of this meibomian gland stuff can basically fall down between two disciplines - ophthalmology and dermatology - requiring either an ophthalmologist who's very derm savvy or a dermatology who's very eye savvy, maybe even both in a particularly complex case. Just wondering if a derm might have some insight that the ophths so far have not had.

Were you using straight tea tree oil?

Dan, you really need a biopsy to find out what that actually is, if you haven't already.

        Hello Daniel,

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I wasn't 22 when my eye problems started (I was 33) but I can understand how distressing itis.

My dry eye saga began when I woke one morning with eye pain 17 years ago. Along with eye pain, during the first couple of years I got a lot of styes and chalazia. One chalazion stayed for 2+ years. I guess I was lucky because it was a relatively smallish, firm, white lump on my left lower lid and it never hurt (the styes were itchy and painful). A lot of people would ask me about it and I would just tell them that the doctor said it would go away in time. My doctor also told me that warm compress and *very, very* light massage would help (FYI I'm not sure that I would massage anything that hurt!!). But I think the main thing to do is *see your doctor regularly* and keep close tabs on it. And if it's painful or gets bigger or redder, go see the doctor (ophthal) ASAP.

My long-lasting chalazion did eventually go away but I still have a little "notch" in the lid where it was. I see my doctor (cornea specialist) regularly (or more often when needed), and I haven't had anymore styes or chalazia.

I hope you find out what is going on (that's a very frustrating part -- not knowing exactly what it is) and get it under enough control that you can manage during the time it fades. Please keep us updated and we'll help as much as we can. And please let us know your location so someone can perhaps recommend a doctor.

        All the best,
        Sheila

Daniel, I know you're not UK but hope this might help you run through possible lumps http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Exte...mal-System.htm

We do use tea tree organic shampoo as an eyelid margin scrub but very diluted, and daily for 4wk then only 1/wk. We are really careful with that stuff because it gets a bit toxic, also the eyes and skin get sensitised if we use it too much.

            Hi guys,

First of all, thank you so much for your kind replies. It really means a lot to me and it feels very comforting. I live in the Netherlands, Europe and the doctors that I have visited so far were GP's and Ophthalmologist's. As I mentioned in my previous post, I went to my Ophthalmologist again last Thursday.

She could confirm that the swelling is probably a chalazion (she did not mention blepharitis, unlike my GP) and that there is most likely also some kind of cicatrix involved. She had never heard of the usage of tea tree oil on chalazia. I told her about something that I have read online about using an injection (eather corticosteroïd or KenacortA10®) and she said we could try that. Half september, they will inject my chalazion with eather corticosteroïd or KenacortA10® (it all went very fast so I forgot what they will use now.. but I will call and ask). Does anyone have any experience with this kind of treatment?

To answer your questions: Rebecca - I have never had any other skin disorders. I do have Hay Fever which also affects my eyes usually a month during springtime, but I use medicine that really helps so it does not bother me.

About the tea tree oil. I was experimenting with it a lot. I have tried to use it straight on my eye lids, sometimes mixed with warm water. Two times a day, but after a couple of times only in the evening. The stinging was really bad so after a while I only applied it mixed with warm water on the swelling itself (so not on the eye lid as it was too close to my eye.). As I said before, I stopped using this simply because the reaction to it was too unstable and it just felt too harsh on my skin. Then again, I did read a lot of articles online claiming that tea tree oil did seem to have an affect on a chalazion (which I also experienced) so I am still thinking about maybe using it again? I have to be honest that I was not very precise with the ammount of water and drops of tea tree I used, so the unstable reaction might have been caused by just using too much? Maybe preciseness is key? What do you think @littlemermaid? I do use tea tree shampoo to wash my hair and tea tree face wash to clean my face every evening.

If the injection in september does not help, I will go to the eye hospital in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) to see if they maybe have other ideas. Seeing a derm is something that I never thought about before, but after calling with this hospital (to check if it had any use to come by) they also confirmed that seeing a derm would not be such a bad idea. Because of the cicatrix involved, I have started to use Calendula scar cream to see if this has any effects.

Thank you all once again for you comments and I will keep you updated! If you have any questions or tips, please let me know
