  • Batwell's Story - Part 2.

OK, so I thought I was cured! I was using Genteal Gel every night in my right eye and had had no erosions for over 6 years. Then about 4 weeks ago I noticed some mild discomfort in the left eye in the morning. It didn't feel like anything to panic over but I started using Genteal in both eyes.

Then, on Friday July 18 (a day that will live in infamy) I had a full blown erosion. This happened around noon which was very atypical but I was able to recover from it in a couple of hours. That night my wife had accidentally bought Genteal PM (a vaseline type ointment) and I used that. Well, guess what? Saturday I woke with another erosion.

I spent most of Saturday and Sunday on the internet researching RCE. I found this forum and read probably 1000 posts. I restarted my earlier routine but wondered if there were some new and better treatments.

I saw my optometrist on Wednesday and she confirmed the erosion and diagnosed ABMD. She said that the epithelium was healing very well but with the ABMD I would be at risk forever. She recommended Muro 128 and to continue with the Genteal. She also recommended something that I had never heard of which was to use a hair dryer at arms length to help remove any water from the basement layer. I have not tried this.

So I was using Muro 128 and Genteal and waking up at 1:00AM and also running a humidifier. Monday August 8, I had another erosion (relatively very mild) and ordered a pair of Tranquileyes. I am now also using the Tranquileyes at night without the pads and occasionally in the evening with the warm water treatment.

Since then everything seems fine. Although last night (in a hotel) things felt a little sticky and I re-gooped again at about 4:00AM. No erosion though for which I am EXTREMEMY grateful.

So, that's my story. Compared to some here in this forum I feel very lucky but compared to the general population without eye problems I feel very unlucky.

Oh dear, poor you - welcome to the dystrophy club.

If you've read 1000 posts you probably know this already - but I recommend that you ask your corneal specialist about getting bandage contact lenses (the kind you wear overnight) and also a course of doxycycline, and look into getting Dwelle/Clinitas Ultra 3 eye drops and using them around 4 times per day.

This has been my routine for a couple of months now and my eyes are definitely improving.
