  • My dry eyes 90% cured with Omega 3 and Organic Flaxseed

Just wanted to put this out there. Hopefully it will be of use to someone. I used to have really dry eyes and my eyes got very red, but usually only at night. It was so uncomfortable, I was forced to blink around twice a second and it lasted for hours. Drops were usually effective for less than 5 minutes. I'd have to keep them going in constantly.

I started taking Omega 3 and Flaxseed capsules and within a few days I felt a massive difference. At first I didn't even notice the improvement, I just saw my drops lying on the table and thought to myself, 'I've not had to use them in a while', then it hit me. It was the Omega 3 and Flaxseed working.

I had dry eyes for over 2 years. I started taking Omega 3 and Flaxseed capsules about 6 months ago and I've not felt the need to use eye drops in those 6 months. I do get dry eyes sometimes, maybe twice or three times a week, but it's usually only for a few minutes as opposed to daily and lasting for hours like it was before. I was diagnosed with blepharitis but when I last went to see the eye specialist and she looked into my eyes with those eye machine things - she told me there was almost no sign of it.

It's worth noting that I thought I could get away with buying some cheap Flaxseed capsules off eBay but they weren't as effective as the 'Organic' expensive stuff I got from Holland and Barrett. Annoying - but I don't mind paying the premium. I'd imagine a lot of people try the cheap stuff off eBay and it doesn't work for them so they rule it out.

I'd say my dry eyes are 90% cured. I do however still have very red eyes only at night time from 6pm which is very strange and baffles all the GP's and Eye Specialists I've visited - and I've been to a lot! I'm working on a cure for that now #StayingPositive ...Sorry

Oh I forgot to write dosages. I take quite a high dose of both. 2x Omega 3 and 4x Flaxseed in the morning, then 2x Omega 3 and 2x Flaxseed in evening/night. But I've noticed if I take them all in the morning it doesn't make them any less effective. The Omega I'm using has EPA 180mg/DHA 120mg and the Flaxseed has Organic High Lignan Flaxseed Oil 2000mg containing Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3) 1140mg, Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) 320mg, Oleic Acid (Omega 9) 360mg, and Palmitic Acis, Stearic Acis 180mg.

As much as I hate coming onto this forum (it always makes me feel down when I have this subject on my mind - although the dryness has improved dramatically, the bloodshot eyes after 6pm has massively affected my social life and confidence), I'm happy to answer any questions but might take a few days to reply.

Do you have blepharitis or blurred vision?

Try cleaning your eyelids with baby shampoo and a wet cloth. It wiped out my nightime redness. It really works.

        Just blepharitis, no blurred vision.

Thanks very much for the advice, I'll definitely try it out. I'm guessing you didn't let the shampoo touch your eyes - I bet that would sting. Do you know the process behind why it got rid of the redness?

I have dry eyes and bleph etc and was thinking of following this orthodox advice, but read an alarming story about a potential link between fish oil supplements and prostate cancer.

I don't think the Mail was the only paper reporting on it. Still, each to their own.

Hi red eye guy, I was just wondering if you could post a link of the flaxseed oil supplement you are taking please, I'm looking for a good one. Also did you have any luck on improving eye redness upon waking in the morning? I've been using a tea tree was on my lids before I go to bed and if I wake in night I wash eyes again, every day is different though, I woke up sun morning and for the first time in years my eyes felt wonderful, I could feel the coolness of my tears but it soon faded after being up for an hour.
I woke up this morning to very angry and inflamed pinguecula, so frustrating

I've had no luck on my eyes unfortunately. They're still as red as ever. They're slightly red in the morning when I wake up but I'm not too bothered about that as it's not too bad and I don't tend to see many people in the morning! It's more in the evening when they get ridiculously red after 6pm, and that's the time I usually go out and meet friends - that kind of thing - and I get very self conscious. It's weird, I can spend a week getting up at 4am, or 11am - whatever - they will always get red at 6pm. Even when I fly across the world and I'm in a completely different time zone, they then go red at 6pm at my current timezone!

Cathy, does the tea tree oil help with the redness?

Holland & Barrett Organic Flaxseed Oil Capsules 1000mg £29.99

Those are the Flaxseed capsules I use. They're expensive but sometimes they have a "Buy one, buy another for a penny" sale and I usually wait for that and stock up. Then I use their loyalty card so they're not actually as expensive as they first appear. Like I said I've used the cheaper ones on eBay but they don't work for me at all. It's also worth mentioning I lowered my Flaxseed dosage from 6 a day to 4 a day. It's been about 2 weeks and I've seen no deterioration in my eyes so that's definitely good! I could experiment more and lower the dosage to 2 but I'm in no hurry - I'll give it a few months yet and see what happens with just 4 a day. The Omega 3 tablets I've kept on 4 a day because they're dirt cheap.

This is something I've really wanted to try but the prostate cancer risks are something I can't ignore.
