  • Coming from a teen

Hi everyone. My name is Keith and I'm from Singapore. I'm 19 this year. I think it's been about a year and a half since I've last viewed this forum. I was diagnosed with dry eyes when I was sixteen, which coincidentally happens to be the year of my major exams.

It probably started in August. When there was this constant tingling/irritation in my eyes. Back then, my degree for left and right eye was at least 190, though I might be wrong. I wasn't too bothered by it due to the stress of my exams. But following September, it got worse. I went to see my the person who checks my degree when I change spectacles. She said she wasn't sure what caused it and asked me to see a doctor. By then, I had to go to Hong Kong for family reasons and I still remembered my eyes hurting due to the dryness of the plane cabin during the flight. When I got back to Singapore, my dad brought me to a clinic, where by the doctor said it could be my eyelashes that were causing the irritant and might need eye lid surgery or something. But she still recommended me to see a specialist which I did.

Now, my majors were gonna start in late October. And by then, I think it was still early October. I went to see the specialist who diagnosed me with dry eyes. But the way he put it was as if it was something that wasn't too drastic. I on the other hand was experiencing pain every single damn day. He did a schirmers test and said my eyes were dryer than the regular eyeball. He then prescribed me with preservative free eye drops and fish oil capsules, concluding that if I ever ran out, drop by to purchase the items again, implying that it was a chronic condition.

So the medication begun at mid October,2012. Take eye drops whenever eyes were really dry(every hr), plus the capsules twice a day. I remembered December 2012, when my family went to Japan for holidays, the weather there was close to 0 degrees and practically killed my eyes. I then thought it how pointless it would be for me to live. Like I couldn't travel to cold countries in the future, couldn't stand air conditioned rooms( which I knew my next form of education would provide as classrooms), eyes hurting every minute and probably affect me in getting a drivers license. Waking up was like hell for my eyes in the hotel room in Japan. I felt like ****.
By the way, I started reading dry eye zone in September 2012, and truth be told, the more I read , the more pessimistic I felt due to the average age of people with dry eyes was twenty plus. I'm not too sure about now in 2015.

Anyways,I carried on the medication(eye drops plus fish capsules) until I think about April2013, where I just felt like I didn't need the eye drops. However, my eyes were still hurting, just not too the point where I needed to apply the drops. So I just ate the fish oil capsules everyday ( whenever possible, I ate fish).

FINALLY, I think it was after another year till February/March where I thought maybe I shouldn't eat the capsules anymore. By then my eyes either felt like it was used to the pain or was not as dry as before. Now, it wasn't the eating the capsules that everyday that was annoying, I grew accustomed to eating it every day, sort of like breakfast and dinner. I just wanted to try not popping them back in my mouth and see how my eyes were gonna perform. After about a week, my eyes didn't feel any change of "effect".

Now in 2015, my eyes are beginning to hurt, mid February. It was then I was reminded of this forum. So I decided to write my story and see how it goes from here.

If anyone wants my advice, I would say, follow ur specialist's prescription and eat as much fish whenever possible, like leftovers etc. if it helps, Singapore is an extremely humid country where the air isn't really dry. So consider purchasing air humidifiers I think. If I could tahan(singlish word) dry eyes at the age of sixteen, I'm sure the adults on this forum can tahan they're dry eyes as well.

EXTRA NOTE: sorry if my experience might not seem coherent or seemed weird, i've beefing meaning to post at this forums for a while now but haven't really got to it.
the pills i took are : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1-...NBLWRPZnM/view (strangely i couldn't find a link for the product on the web)

    Hi Keith,
thank you for your story. You are another person who confirmed there are some results with fish capsules. This motivates me to keep using them eventhough I can't see any results yet.

How many capsules do you take now? Do you take one during a breakfast and one during a dinner?

You're welcome! I took it twice a day. Once before breakfast and one before dinner. I believed I stop taking the pills last August.

Keith. I'd just like you to know I am a dry eye sufferer who has turned 19 this year. Ive been suffering since I was 17. I find it kind of comforting to know it's not just me that is suffering at such a young age.

Yeah. Trust me. I know what you're going through, its a terrible feeling where you feel like there isn't any purpose in living and that no one else around you understands your pain. But have faith in yourselves and don't give up in whatever you aim to do in life! If you need someone to confide to, feel free to message me anytime.

Hi Keith, I'm Jessica, 45 years old, from Singapore too. I understand exactly what you are going through. I had my schirmers test 2 years ago at SNEC. My reading was close to ZERO! I experience vast improvement after some TCM application. If you are interested to know how much it had helped me, you may private message me.

Oh sounds good! If my eyes become unbearable again (i sincerely hope not), i will definitely explore TCM as an option.

Hi Keith, I am also from Singapore. I am looking out for help for dry eye patient/friend. Where did you buy the Neu Tears? Also, about getting a humidifier in humid Singapore - I don't understand the need for it since the air in Singapore is moist at 80% RH, so why the need for humidifier, you suggested, which is used to add moisture to the air?

Do you mean to say dehumidifier? But dehumidifier extracts moisture from the air - this dry environment doesn't help dry eyes which is calling for a moist environment. That is why moisture eye glass chamber is used, to retain moisture around the eyes.

                Can you clarify?

                Thanks.

                  Hi ok45sg!
Sorry for the late reply! Just enlisted and was in camp.

For the neuTears, I actually bought it at the practice address of the eye specialist that i went to see. The address is:
                  Mount Alvernia Medical Centre A
                  #05-01 Mount Alvernia Hospital
                  820 Thomson Road
                  Singapore 574623.
For me, the first time i got it was after the doctor's recommendation. Subsequently when I needed stock, I just bought it OTC from his receptionist. So I'm not sure if you need a doctor to prescribe it to you though.

As for the topic on humidifiers, I apologize for not writing clearly when i said consider getting humidifiers as it was meant for foreigners in countries where it is dry and that my country's humidity level is high, thus eliminating the need of humidifiers.
