    Hi

To be honest, I'm not sure if I even have dry eye syndrome, but for now that is what the consultant has put it down to.

My symptoms first started last April (2012) with constantly watering eyes. It built up over a few weeks but got to the point where tears were just dripping out of my eyes. I have a constant layer of water over the eye which made my vision really blurry. I perservered for a few months, thinking it would just go away, but after realisation that it wasn't I was referred to the local eye infirmary. The consultant suggested that my tear ducts were too narrow and operated to open them up. Fantastic result for 6 weeks then it failed and back to square one. I have had another operation since but again, 6 weeks later it failed and I'm left with the same problem. Everytime they operate the problem seems to come back 10 times worse than the first.

Having gone back for a post op check up the consultant said that I would probably always suffer to some degree, said that it might also be dry eyes and then discharged me, only for the symptoms to come back with a vengence 3 days later .... I have now asked to be referred to another hospital and have an appointment in June. My main problem is the constant watering, they drip like a continual tap which is now leaving them blood shot and sore. The only medication I have been prescribed is Viscotears but that just doesn't help.

I am at my wits end, its nice to see on hear that I'm obviously not alone, and I'm sure others will know how I'm feeling when I say that it makes me feel completely miserable. It not only affects my eyes, but my face as well from the constant watering/dabbing/watering etc etc.

Grateful for any suggestions about how I can get a better diagnosis, hopefully the next consultant won't just dismiss me and my problem.

    Hi Suncat64,

I'm not a doctor but the problem may be that your meibomian glands are not producing enough meibum (the oil that coats your eye and keeps your tears from evaporating too fast). That can cause your eyes to try and compensate by over-producing tears. My suggestion would be to try and find an anterior segment specialist to get a better diagnosis. If you can manage a trip to London I understand they have excellent ones at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

    Good luck!
