  • New to this dreaded dry eye disease

Hello my name is Andrea and I have developed severe dry out. This all started back in the spring. I started to noticed it was getting harder for me to see the TV at night. My eyes were getting a little red and sore but more so in the morning. I thought it was just allergies and the eye drop Latanaprost I was taking for glaucoma ( oh and now I have recently found out that I do not even have glaucoma and probably never did, but my dr said my pressures were high and I had been taking that medicine for 6 yrs and did not even need it). I went to my Dr (yes the same one that said I had glaucoma) because I did not know who else to go to (she is a cornea specialists) when I started waking up and not being able to see. She said my eyes were dry and said to start using tears. Well that did not help at all and it was getting worse. I then went to another cornea specialists someone had recommended and he said I had keratitis. He told me to take 3000mg fish oil (which 3 months later has not helped), told me to bathe my eyes in tears (use Syatane balance and the preservative free type) and prednisolone. I went back to him 2 weeks later and my eyes were so much better he said no dry spots. But I was having ghosting in my right eye. He said he could not help me anymore and I needed hard contacts. I was like " what !!" So I went back to my original Dr like 2 weeks later who said my eyes were dry again and she put plugs in the top (I had already had them in the bottom from back in 2012 but I am not sure why I did not really have any dry eye issues then). She also gave me some soft contatcs that helped with my regression in the left eye (which started about a year ago) and it also helped with the ghosting. I had excess tearing which was OK because of the contacts. OK fast forward to 9-20-14 I was getting my hair done at the salon and my right eye (the worse of the two) started burning and turning red and then it was like all of a sudden the excess tearing stopped in both eyes and now I am very dry all the time even with the plugs. It is worse at night (really bad). I am taking TheraTears Nutrition (3 gels) everyday instead of the fish oil and I do warm compresses and lid scrubs. I am so worried because I do not know how it got this bad so suddenly. I am going to another new Dr someone recommened in 3 weeks. I am hoping he can help me. I have heard of Restasis but I also heard it does nto help with plugs. Any suggestions for me? Also thanks to everyone for their support, it helps to talk with people going through this.

    Hi Andrea,

I am using restasis. I have plugs. The doctor says that it does not matter if you have plugs or not. And really, I do feel the restasis so it must be on the eye. However, it has been a year and my eyes are not better. It did not make them worse though either. Unfortunatley, you may have to go to different doctors until you find one that you trust. It is so sad believe me, I have been to 7 in the past 2 years. I am still not convinced with this current one and will go to him one more time and see how he is , If I do not like it, I will move on again. There are many things to try but you have to give each trial time to work. For instance, if you try restasis, you really almost have to give it 6 months to a year before you may see any improvement. It does help alot of people and you may be one of them. I am trying Lacriserts right now (eye pellets) and the first day they worked great. 2nd day - not so great. 3rd day not at all, today- not so great again. however, it states to give it a good 2 weeks before dropping the whole idea of them. Read through the "Triumph" section, you will see alot of positive things that work for people. what works for one may not work for another, you just have try everything until you find something that helps. God Bless, Sue

Thank you Sue I have heard of thos eye pellets Lacriserts. They are SO expensive in the US. I do not have drug coverage but I have HD health plan with an HSA. I have alos looked at Canadian phramacies for meds if I am needing them. I guess I am so shocked because this came on so sudden. Also another weird thing is that even when my eyes are dry at nigth (that is the worst time) they are not red or excessivlely teary. You would think they would be red at least. Of course I am no longer wearing those soft contacts. I think it made everything so much worse. I am so mad she suggested that !! I am waiting to go see this new DR on 10-22-14 and hopefully get some glasses as well. another complication I have is that my corneas steepen through the day. yes a whole diopter in the right eye. Of course no Dr seems to know why that is so I also have vision fluctuation

If you decided to try the Lacriserts, if you go to their website or just google coupon for them. There is a coupon to get them for $10.
Mine was sudden too. I had Lasik surgery 7 years ago and have been fine. Then all of a sudden one day...... as the story goes.
My glasses have a tint on them called FL-41. They help with driving headlight glare at night and I wear them when ever my eyes are very dry and bright lights are hard on them. I wear them when I watch TV sometimes too because my TV screen is huge like a movie theater so it is bright.
I hope this doctor helps you. Let me know how it goes! You are not alone in this, we are all here for the same reason.....to be fixed! hahaha.

        God Bless Always,

        Sue
