  • Incomplete eye closure at nite in a child

Hi..I have a 9 year old wonderful daughter who has had 7 surgeries to date for an obital tumor...one surgery corrected a droopy eyelid seconday to muscle damage from a tumor resection surgery.Anyway, we are doing the taping shut at nite and give her drops every hour or so during the day. We have just purchased the nite goggles and hope to stop the taping as it is labor intensive and prevents sleep overs which is very important for her. Ok, so my big question is why does she repeatedly every morning wake up with huge bags under her eye..she is typically very swollen underneath. She doesnt per se have a tear production problem but a tear distribution problem as she doesnt blink as frequently or as completely as her healthy eye...any ideas about the bag? She is becoming so much more aware of her appearance and being "different"..it breaks my heart....Vicky:

    Vicky,
Could she have a allergy to the tape? You may need to ask a Dr. on that one.
I have always had bags under my eyes, Just heredity, but it can also be a symptom of other illnesses.

I use Glad Press and Seal Wrap to tape my eyes at night.
It was much easier to tolerate for me than tape.
It does not hurt to remove, and can be repositioned easily.
Some one, I forget who on this site , tried it and liked it also.

      The Power of Tranquileyes

      Hi, Vicky.

I'm so sorry to hear that your nine-year old is going through all of this. What a tough thing for her.

This may help or not, but when I was at my corneal specialist's office in June, his nurse was running through updating my chart, and I mentioned that I had success combating recurrent corneal erosions by using Tranquileyes goggles, which I learned about here and bought at the Dry Eye Shop. The nurse said, "I LOVE Tranquileyes goggles," so I asked her if she uses them, and she said that she does not but watched the problems that two little girls (sisters), right around your daughter's age, had because their eye lids did not close fully during sleep, and it was the Tranquileyes goggles that helped them to recover.

So, let us know how the nighttime goggles work for your daughter. If the ones that you have have foam, you may want to try moistening them and using them dry, alternately, to see which works best. I started out moistening the foam but now just use them dry, and that works better for me.

      Good luck!

Thanks for the input..we are working up to using the goggles....can you tell me if tape is no longer needed when you use the press and seal type of Saran wrap? That would be fabulous..if we could do away with taping shut and also stop using the saran wrap because of the goggles , she and I would be ecstatic....as far as asking a dr. about the swelling..they referred me to an allergist..been there done that..not related to allergies or sinus stuff..ugh...Im wondering about edema and perhaps too much moisture...anyone care to comment? thanks sooo much for responding...

I can only speak from my experience, but the press and seal is all I need to keep mine closed at night.
You could try and see, if it doesn't work for you it is not a waste, you can always use it for leftovers!
