    Hi,

I'm a software engineer and I've been suffering from chronic dry eyes for well over 1 year now.

In July, I was given two punctal plugs for my lower puncta. This gave some relief - albeit intermittent. About 1 month ago, I had temporary upper plugs inserted and it felt like my world was about to change! I had perfect vision, and no dryness for about a week and a half.

Excitedly, I returned last week to the doctor to have permanent plugs inserted into my upper puncta. Since then however - my eyes have been very wet and very painful. Reading this forum - it sounds like I am having a reaction to the plugs of sorts - any my eye is now producing excess tears thinking they have a foreign body they need to get rid of. These tears are not as oily as normal tears - and are flushing my eye constantly of the oil they need to stay comfortable.

I also have pterigia in both eyes - it seems the upper plugs have really irritated these as well since they are both extremely red since last week. Would having the pterigia removed help at all in preventing my eyes becoming so damn dry and painful?

I returned to the doctor this week to discuss these symptoms - he said that there are no other plugs he knows of that do half-plugging - or behave the same way as the temporary plugs (which were just perfect for me).

I have another booking with the eye-doctor in December - to decide whether or not to remove the upper plugs. He says, that my only option next will be some expensive tear-drops, Restasis from memory.

Does anyone here know of the best doctor in Sydney, Australia to treat this? It seems I have not been properly diagnosed at all and am just getting the cookie-cutter treatment.

Thanks so much to the people who set up this forum and the people on here sharing such important, life changing, information.

Possibly another type of plug would work better, intra canicular? Have you seen a specialist yet. Sorry cant help you with your other ?'s. Restasis takes several months to see results even then not a cure all. There are great tips regarding comfort ie, diet, sleep etc. It has helped me, hang in there
