  • Need a dry eye expert in Pittsburgh, PA!

I was diagnosed with severe dry eye, SLK, rosecea, blephlaritis and meibomeitis about 9 months ago.
I have been to several doctors and 2 cornea specialists who cannot get me off of steriods or improve my condition.

I am on Lotemax, Restasis, autologous serum drops, and oflaxacin.
Also, doxycycline, flaxseed 4000mg, and fish oil.
I still live in chronic pain and cannot function normally.

I was a long term soft contact wearer and I believe my hormones (lack of) are playing a role in this chronic inflammation.

I need suggestions on who is the best doctors in the Pittsburgh area for severe dry eyes. I have "been there/done that" with most doctors and then they run out of suggestions.

I would also appreciate any suggestions on doctors outside of the area.
    I will travel if necessary.
I just need the best who will take the time to help me!

Please help! I'm running out of options!

    Hi, Szy.

I can plug Dr. Francis Mah here, but he is a corneal specialist rather than a dry eye specialist.

You may want to check out the forum on scleral lenses at the Boston Foundation for Sight.

      Thanks for the reply!

Dr. Mah was a doctor I was considering...
After reading your post, I called and scheduled an appt. for tomorrow!
(Couldn't believe I got in so quick!)
      I'm hoping he's the answer!
If you know of any others, please keep the names coming.....

i also live in pittsburgh, i have been to a bunch of the doctors, at eye and ear in oakland, with not much success. also seen some doctors in cranberry and butler. i really didnt get heading in the right direction, until i went to nyc and seen dr. latkaney. it is kind of a pain getting there, but if you book a flight early, you can do it for around 200 dollars round trip.

          Thanks!

I was thinking about Dr. Latkaney but wasn't sure how I would make the follow-up trips and appts. that I thought I would need.

Do you think his guidance is much better than the others and worth the trip?

Did he also resolve your eye issues? Were your problems severe?

Mine seem to be out of control, mostly I feel from bad advise from different doctors!

Thanks for replying! Hope to hear from you again!

my eye issues are not resolved, and may never be completely great, but i have found a way to be very manageable, which is my goal. Dr Latkaney has a very vast understanding of our problems, and it is what he specializes in. He will talk to you and answer all your questions. His office is awesome, and you can call anytime, and get help. I hate new york city, but it is worth 1 day of hassle to get on the right path. the last time i was there, i caught a plane at 6 am in pittsburgh, flew to jfk, took a cab to his office, and made it back to jfk, and back home by early evening. I have found, the less time you spend in NYC, the cheaper it is.

Thanks for the advise. I may have to make the trip to get on the right track.
I agree, I'm not asking for perfect, just functionable!
