  • Interesting radio programme on accessing meds NHS, rare diseases etc

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b069y66l#play

Very interesting programme on Radio Scotland broadcast a couple of days ago.
It talks about the problems patients face with trying to access unlicensed medications through the NHS, and the challenges faced by those with medically unexplained symptoms or rare diseases.

Although obviously there is no discussion directly related to dry eye disease, I think it is a very worthwhile listen for anyone having difficulties with accessing medicines (I'm thinking cyclosporine is a relevant example here) or indeed getting their doctors to take them seriously.

There is quite in depth discussion of thyroid problems which may also be relevant to a lot of people here, and one woman who has Sjogrens, amongst other diseases.

The section of the programme to listen to starts about 1 hour and 5 mins into the show and lasts nearly an hour. You can fast forward through with iPlayer to the start of the section.

Excellent, thank you very much, Unicorn. 'Nobody is going to make a clinical trial for a drug that doesn't cost money.' That explains a lot https://www.gov.uk/../medicines-and-healthcare-products-regulatory-agency/services-information
