  • Is this MGD? Back and forth between thick and thin oil secretion.

The oil from my meibomian glands constantly switches between normal secretions and thick viscous secretions. It will run clear for weeks or even a month, then it randomly turns thick and gives me severe dry eye symptoms for 1-2 weeks before turning clear again.

What do you call this? Does anyone else have this pattern?

I can 100% tell the difference based on how it feels, how it flows, and how it looks.

If you're female, have you noticed a correlation with the menstrual cycle? There are known between with meibum quality and hormones.

Already seen dozens. No diagnosis beyond 'dry eye disease'. My tear quality is fine. The only problem is what I've described.

Anyways, I really don't want this to turn into a conversation about how I should only consult a doctor. Just want to know if other MGD folks have this pattern, or if anyone else has or has seen this pattern.

I would suspect it is. The clear cause of MGD is unknown, it sounds like you have some form of MGD , perhaps not as severe as others on this forum. I would still initiate treatment since there is little risks invovled. I would try IPL and maybe initiate Xiidra.

Sounds like mild MGD, could be triggered by anything, e.g. stress, not sleeping enough. If this is happening without any treatments, then you would probably respond great to simple treatments. I would try Azyter/Azasite drops if you haven't already.
