  • Cleaning air vents

I have seen several ads for cleaning the air vents and ducting in a house. The ads claim it helps with allergies. Has anyone tried this and does it help?

If you're allergic to dust and mold or very sensitive to irritants and the ductwork hasn't been cleaned in many years it can help, depending on the type of ductwork you have. Or could be helpful if your heat pump is so old it starts to fall apart and tiny pieces blow out the ductwork and irritates the eyes (happened to me). But for most people I've heard it doesn't help. Also the pros doing the job need to really know what they're doing. If you have soft ductwork (fabric/paper like stuff) cleaning can damage them and make them more likely to collect junk from the air. Not many know how to clean those safely. If you have chemical allergies, be careful about what chemicals they're using.

Just my opinion, based on a couple of experiences.
