  • New Member/ 3months Lasik induced dry eye

This is MISERABLE! Hi! I never knew you guys existed.... I am so sorry that so many people are suffering!

I am 39 y.o. wife, mother of 3 boys (10,6,3), and a professional. I was contact lense intolerant prior to Lasik- AKA Dry eyes (never used eye drops). I knew from the very beginning after Lasik I had made a very big MISTAKE! The sad news is there was no discussion about dry eye in my pre-op evaluation other than it is temporary and you will need to use some eye drops for a couple of months. I had no idea that this could be excruiating and debiliatating. This is sick! Of course, I started searching the internet and started reading all the horror Lasik stories. REALLY 1 out of 5 people end up with severe dry eye? I was told <1 % of any major complications. Are they lying? The worry and anxiety set in after reading the internet and my mental state spiraled out of control! My faith in God and my husband have helped me dig myself out of this dark hole I have been in. I am sure I am not out of the woods but at least I am not crying everyday and I am slowly moving forward.

Treatments so far: at 4 weeks, lower temporary collagen plugs for Tbut 4 and Schirmers Test of 5, repeated the test and yes the Schirmers test is 5 on both eyes OUCH! The plugs felt amazing for about 2 days. I went back and the plugs were gone? I had them placed again, uppers and lowers.....didn't do much. I am currently on Restasis BID, tried steriods, doxy, warm compress, cold compress, humidifier, lid scrubs, azasite, and have tried every over the counter drops available. I have had normal tear lab screenings. My glands look normal, perhaps some mild capping. I think I am mostly tear deficient. My eyes feel so "sensitive" when I put the drops in. I am not sure if I am explaining this correctly but I cringe everytime I need to put drops in... they just don't seem to help. I sometimes just close my eyes instead of putting drops in. Any thoughts?

My Lasik clinic has been following me every 1-2 weeks. It makes me so sad to go in there and look at these people and know they are continuing to destroy lives everyday without warning. I know, I know I am only 3 months into this mess and I pray to God that I will get better. But, lets face it who wants to go through 3-6 months, 9 months, 1yr or maybe even longer of dry eye to not wear glasses or contacts. This is ridulous. How did I not know this could happen to me???????

Okay moving on.....Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest! So how do I keep moving forward? I had to take a month off of work, my eyes just hurt to much to keep them open. Plus, I am trying to take care of my 3 children. I am praying non-stop and I know this is the only thing that has saved me thus far. Thanks for listening. Someone please tell me why I thought it was a good idea to let someone CUT my eyes.....oh dear GOD!

Praying for peace and comfort for all of us!

    Hi LA

Keep on praying and don't lose faith . Iam one year post lasik and despite pain etc i have been blessed so much this past year and thank God he stopped my busy rushed life to look into his will not mine.

U couldn't have know this would happen so don't dwell on that but focus on now not on ifs etc.

Sounds like u have a great family and a good lasik place who r monitoring u well. Yes hard to sit there while others go in for lasik and u feel like shouting
R u happy with their treatment ? Hope they rnt throwing kitchen sink at u as u sound like u have tried heaps of things. seek a Dr interested in dry eyes early on if possible. a systematic approach is better than trying everythimg at once.
I like theratears drops but i have mgd so this may not work for u. otherwise celluvisc is nice.

Rejoice and smile for the little things. Romans 15:13. Don't lose hope.
Iam feeling better thank God so u will too but like u said take one day at a time. Feel free to pm if u like.

Hi LA. I'm sorry that you are so uncomfortable. Your post sounds so much like what happened to me except that I am 6 months post lasik. I started feeling the bad dry eye a few days after lasik. My lasikMD pretty much threw everything at me...restasis, doxy, all 4 ducts plugged, etc. but I was still in PAIN. I also had to take a month off from work as it was killing my eyes. I was in so much burning pain and experienced lot of anxiety. It took a toll on my husband and my kids--I have 3 kiddos too. On my month off, I saw an MD who specializes in dry eyes (doesn't do LASIK) and she is a Godsend. She has brought me to a manageable level and will continue to follow me. Don't get me wrong, my eyes are still DRY but she has encouraged a routine that seems to be working. I am still having to baby my eyes but I am a lot more comfortable than 3 months ago. I still get down at times but I think back to my appts with my specialist and I have hope. I am still working very part-time as I work 12 hour overnight shifts in a very DRY hospital but I am able to get by. Also, my kids and my husband have noticed a huge change in my attitude and outlook. ---That speaks volumes to me.

I second what SOAPS suggested. Perhaps getting a second opinion from a specialist will provide more objectivity and can help approach things systematically. Also, this forum is fantastic for ideas and encouragement. Pls feel free to PM me. I have had contact with some members of this forum and they are very encouraging. I hate that others have gone thru or are going thru what I am but it helps with the whole understanding part.

        Hang in there....SDgirl

Wow SDgirl that is excellent u r working in hospital. i know wat they r like as i too worked in one and i admire u for continuing. I know wat u mean about losing hope but then stopping and rationally remembering Dr plan and reasoning and continuing on despite small progress but progress nevertheless.

            All the best.
