  • Greetings all

I'm 26 and from the UK.

I've always used computers during my studies and also playing games at home and partly because of this I am very short sighted, I also work in kitchens which may be a part of the problem as they can be very dry. In about 2000 I started wearing contacts, which was ok at first at work, but as the months went on my eyes rejected them somewhat, I started to notice red lines in my eyes but ignored it.

After 2 years I gave up on them and went back to wearing glasses, my eyes were ok, sometimes if I used the computer too much my eyes would become very red and sore, but it would clear up quick.

Last may I decided to decorate my bedroom, and I'm sure it was just around that time I noticed that my eyes really became irritated at any real time on the computer or playing consoles. Since then it's just become worse and worse.

My eyes are always sore now, they are marked badly with red lines, its a nightmare, I'm always thinking how my eyes appear to other people. Even now, with just a few minutes on the computer I bet they're really red....

I'm only young and it's getting me depressed, I feel like there's no-one else on the planet who has it as bad as me... I saw my optician last year (since then they have got worse) and he just told me I have dry eyes and if I want I could try using some cream at night that keeps them moist...

I don't know what to do... any advice... ?
Instead of thinking about what you're missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.

    Welcome, Tetley.

Awfully sorry for your situation, though I understand only too well.

I might suggest that you start by exploring some of the links on this website's home page. There, you'll find terminology, causes, medicines, therapies, and other treatment options that you can discuss with your eye doctor.

We have a few UK participants on this forum, some of whom might be able to help you with British doctor referrals or particular treatments available on your side of the pond.

I'm 42 and have been dealing with my eyes for over 25 years. I understand what you're going through. It may be good for you to think about talking with some sort of counselor to help you better manage all of the struggles that Dry Eye Syndrome imposes.

I wish you all the best.

    Neil

      Hi Tetley

      Welcome to the site!
I'm so sorry to hear about your problem. I am 28, and although my eyes have occasionally bothered me over the past 5 years, this winter they just got awful. My first suggestion is to find a good eye doctor if you don't already have one. A corneal specialist would be even better. You will find that there are many underlying causes for dry eyes and its very important to understand WHY your eyes are dry. There is a reason, and it might be fairly easy to manage. Perhaps you even developed an allergy to something-who knows? That your eyes get very red is a significant symptom. Believe it or not, a lot of dry eyes stay nice and white. So go see a good doctor and describe your symptoms. Meanwhile, we will help support you in whatever way we can.
      Best Wishes
