  • Zeno Hot Spot acne treatment used for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Hey, guys, I wanted to run this by the forum and see if anyone has any perspective on this idea. I actually got this idea from another forum user but I won't implicate her unless she wants to be included...

She and I both believe that Meibomian Gland Dysfunction should be treated as a sort of "inflammatory acne" type condition, since the pathophysiology of the 2 are very similar - skin particles and hardened oil blocking a gland with resultant bacterial overgrowth.

There is a product called Zeno Hot Spot acne remover. You can see it here:

    Here is a pic:

Here is a video of how it is used, etc:

It works by heating the acne lesion and that's it! Just like Lipiflow or warm compresses, etc. There is no massage component to this - just heat. They claim 96% effectiveness in 48 hours. Imagine clearing 96% of your meibomian glands in 48 hours!

So, I'm not sure exactly how one would use this, but I can relate it to my experience with Lipiflow: Lipiflow heated my glands to exactly 43 degrees Celcius (a safe and effective temperature according to Dr. Korb) then it massaged them. Total 12 minutes. Lipiflow worked from the inside of the eyelid.

The Zeno heats to 118.5 degrees Farenheit (47 or 48 degrees Celcius). So it is a little hotter than Lipiflow. Also you hold it in your hand and it only treats a small area of skin for around 2.5 minutes.

I'm really not sure how one would use this for MGD. Maybe as a warm compress? Maybe apply it to the eyelid margin? Maybe apply it to the eyelash base?

    Anyone have any ideas?
