This may be of benefit for our UK sufferers.
PEARS Scheme gives you free access to an optometrist in some parts of the UK. In Wales, the link is

You can access this scheme directly by going to an optometrist that subscribes to the scheme, or via your GP. I think it needs to be an acute flair-up rather than a routine complaint. I have used it recently when my right eye was particularily painful. And to be honest, I have more confidence in the optometrist I saw than the three or so doctors I have been to see.
