  • Good eye doctor in Albuquerque

I just had my first appointment with Bruce Onofrey, OD. He's an optometrist and a specialist in ocular surface disease, including dry eye, glaucoma, and Sjogren's (which I have). Very knowledgeable, calm, logical, friendly. Writes, researches, and lectures on ocular pain and inflammation. Google the name for links to his articles and books--lots of search results. There's even a reference to him here on Dry Eye Talk.

I immediately canceled my appointment with my usual ophthalmologist--I think Dr. Onofrey is going to be much better for me.

For example, when I went in yesterday my eyes were fairly stable, and so he didn't prescribe anything---just asked what I'd tried, what worked and what didn't. The clinic has "acute" appointments every day---open time--so that if I have a flare of bad inflammation I can come in right away. He said that then he would be able to see my eyes at their worst, and would prescribe a med or treatment. Then follow up three weeks later to see how it worked. That sounds really smart and scientific to me.

I liked the way he described what he was seeing on my eyes---as he was looking at them. He drew some sketches in his notes---showed them to me and explained them.
