  • My story, Johanna 5/3/11

I'm afraid I'm very confused about this site, and how to find responses, but I want to post my story, short version, and hope to get some commentary.
I had lasik surgery about ten or so years ago, and had no problems from it. At the time I was livng on Long Island, in New York, which has a moderately moist climate. Three years ago I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is basically a desert. Within a few months I began to notice that my eyes were bothering me, and started going to eye docs. I was told I had dry eyes, and was advised to use eyedrops. My eyes got worse and worse, and in my search for help I was diagnosed with redundant conjunctiva, and then conjunctivochalasis, which I believe is the same thing. By this time I had consulted with a NY cornea specialist, who prescribed Restasis and Lotemax (for a few weeks). My eyes continued to become more painful. I was prescribed Fresh Kote by an optometrist in Santa Fe. More pain. All the while I was having weekly conjunctival hemorhages, and than had the mother of all hemorhages I'd ever seen, and decided to leave Santa Fe, but didn't. I'm now using Restasis, Systane Ultra and Genteal gel at night, have temporary punctal plugs (don't help), and just keep flooding my eyes with the systane at least hourly all day. I have humidifiers going all the time, and a humidity meter, which reads 30% at the most inside, while it can be 5-11% outside. The climate here is much drier than it used to be 3 years ago.
So I am about to go back to NY (I go back about every two months to visit my family), and have an appointment with Dr. Latkany AND with Dr. Raviv, my cornea guy (who told me I'll probably need surgery). What I'm trying to figure out is:
If I get the surgery will going back to Santa Fe undo the benefits?
Is it possible for me to live in Santa Fe for another year without damaging my eyes (using the goggles, and the rest of the stuff)?
Will my conjunctival tissue continue to loosen, even after the surgery, and is it the dryness that makes it do that?
Thank you for listening, and I welcome comments, only not about why I chose to go to or stay in Santa Fe. I have my reasons.johannasas@yahoo.com
