Hey everybody,
This is just an idea that crossed my mind. I'm sure some of you are familiar with Dr. ****** and his gland probing procedure to treat MGD. I understand that after probing/clearing the glands, Dr. ****** injects steroids into the gland in order to prevent re-blockage. After reading about AMX drops, as well as stem cell research being done in regards to eye surface diseases, I wonder what would happen if instead of injecting a steroid, some type of growth factor or a particular type of stem cell was injected into the gland to actually help the glands rejuvenate and heal.
I understand what I am suggesting is probably a heck of a lot more complicated than the way I just summarized, but if you read about stem cells, if I remember correctly there are only two types. Embryonic stem cells (which can now be replicated independent of fetal tissue thanks to 2012 Nobel Prize winners), and adult stem cells which come from the tissues and organs of the body. AMX drops have "growth factors" that help heal the surface of the eye, why can't their be growth factors that help heal meibomian glands? I emailed Dr. ****** about this idea, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. Anyway, just a thought! I'm sure there would be someone out there willing to try it after their gland probing procedure unless doctors really feel the risks are too great.
