I have severe dry eye. I just learned about Benzalkonium Chloride and it's horrible effects on dry eye and corneas in general. I was prescribed Lastacaft and have been using if every day for almost a year and just figured out that Benzalkonium Chloride was the preservative use in this allergy medication. I immediately stopped using the drop and my eyes are less red, less itchy and feel a little better. I have been off the drop for about 2 weeks and was wondering if anyone knows how long this can stay in your system and is the damaged caused by this reversible?
I am so disappointed in the doctors that I have seen never told me of the harsh effects of this preservative on my eyes. I also have used nasal sprays with this preservative in it. Hope someone can give me some kind of answer as I am hoping that with time my eyes will start to feel even better once all of this crap is out of my system. Thanks in advance.
