  • I need help ! Anyone tried St. John's wort or coconut oil in the eye?

Hello,I am glad I found this forum. I am 43 years old and I had LASIK 20 years ago. I started having dry eyes 7 years later. I have tried plugs, Restasis, warm compress and until January of this year, I was managing with some bad episodes here and there and occasional expression by a doctor. In January I started having pain in the right eye which I initially thought just same old dryness. But nothing helped. I am with cornea specialist number 5 now. He did probing with wires, 4 IPLs, tried steroids, serum drops (40%) in addition to artificial tears and warm compress. Nothing has stopped constant pain only in the right eye.

I had cornea abrasion back in 2017 when a piece of plastic got into my eye, and I was told that it healed but I am wondering whether it triggered something. doctor #5 said that I have a "wrinkle" at a small area in the right eye and that if it was worse he could cut that area out with surgery but because it is small, he does not recommend that. He goes back and forth about whether that wrinkle could be causing pain. He said several times that some people experience severe pain from it. Last month after the 4th IPL, he put a bandage lens in that eye. He said this would help heal the irritation from the wrinkle. The lens actually made the pain worse but he told me that this is normal. After a month with the lens, last week he took it out. He said that he is out of option for me. He said that my glands are now about 90% open and that he can see good quality oil coming out -I am taking a lot of oil supplements. (2 weeks ago though another doctor whom I saw for a second opinion said that only one third of the glands re open). At this point I don't know whether I even have dry eye since it is in one eye only.. The left eye is doing better after all the procedures. On the other hand, the artificial tears (Retaine MGD) seem to help-if I keep putting it on every few minutes pain decreases. Last two days I had afternoons and evenings where I could not keep my eye open it hurt so much but also for the first time in a long time I had a few minutes of pain free periods in the morning.

-I am confused about the next step. I contacted doctor 5, he says we can put the lens back and try another medication. But the lens made it worse and it was supposed to be for only one month. Should I seek a 6th doctor?

-Has anyone tried St. John's wort ? my mom has been using it in her eyes and she says it helped with her cataract and eye pressure. I also read that coconut oil might help.

-Has anyone have pain in one eye only? Right now, I am using serum tears 8 times a day, Lotemax, Systaine night time gel, warm compress and Retaine MGD. Thank you.
