  • Possible fix to lasik dry eye/pain

I have been talking to a few doctors about a thought I had, and have had some positive feedback about the possibility of it. The corneal nerves are damaged when lasik is done. Sometimes those nerves don't grow back enough for normal function (chronic dry eye) or they grow back oversensitized. (dry eye and extra pain) or any combination. apparently, there is a percentage chance of something happening. Everytime you cut those nerves you are rolling the dice. Some people have a chance of only 80% regrowth some only 30% .

If you were to purposely severe the nerves all around like a lasik flap maybe further back or even a cornea transplant, then the nerves degenerate in the cornea getting rid of the problematic ones basically "clearing the slate" Then, hopefully give your cornea another chance for nerves to grow in them or to grow normally. The use of nerve growth agents should be used too.

It's an interesting theory... they'd need to do a lot of research before trying it on people though...
