Hello,
I am a post lasik dry eye sufferer. Originally had issues wearing contacts and got LASIK in the summer of 2006. My eyes range to moderate to severe dry eye. I have tried all of the treatments with little help. I try to be scientific in my approach to determine exactly what makes a "good day" good and a "bad day" bad. I tend to have good days sporatically, seemingly unrelated to my typical dry eye regimen.
The one thing that without question makes my eyes much much worse is computer use, and to a slightly lesser degree, watching TV. I am completely aware of how much I blink, I blink constantly. I take several 15 minute breaks throughout the work day, use drops frequently, turn my office light off and rely only on natural light from outside. I also have a computer screen filter, I think it only dims the screen, probably not a UV block. Recently I have been wearing polarized sunglasses that seem to help a very small amount when viewing the screen.
To put it in perspective, after a normal work day in front of a computer my eyes are a 9.5 on a scale of 10 (10 being the worst). On a regular weekend day away from the computer, even if I am outside in the wind, water, etc., my eyes are about a 3 which I consider a slight annoyance, but completely tolerable.
I read an article, I think on this site, that a test was done where UV rays were physically blocked on the patients eye during LASIK, something like a 70% reduction in the number of the people developing dry eye was realized.
This got me thinking, can the radiation emmited from a computer screen or TV, albiet a very small amount, account for my increased dryness? Basically, are there permanent "burns" from my procedure that make me extra sensitive to the screen?
Has anyone else noticed such a dramatic difference in dry eye severity linked to computer/TV use?
