  • Itchy & Sore eyes

    Hi

I had lasik on June 28 2008 at 18 years old. Prior to lasik my eyes had never given me problems, infact I only went to the eye doctor at my once a year appointment only because I had to, however this all changed about a month ago.

Aside from starbursts/halos (mostly at night)my post-lasik experience was great, and I recommended it up until my 6 month post-lasik life when I noticed things werent getting better and aside from a minor incident in which i had double vision in 1 eye for a day everything was great, no dry eye, no pain just halo/starbursts.

How I think my situation changed in the past month differs from before from before :

I have had a total of 4 jobs since Lasik and most have them been in companys that had large work areas (like a grocery store). My new job now is fast food where I am constantly around Grills, Deep fryers and toasters. At the 2 week point i noticed my eyes becoming sore and itchy and Refresh Ultra drops and Gel tear gel just made the sensations worse!. I had been to the eye doctor 3 times in 2 weeks and another time tomorrow (april 15).

My eye doctor has always been extremely helpful and gave me a full eye exam at no charge because for the 2 weeks after i started my eyes were in so much jumble. Other than irritation everything else is "healthy" and just small patches of dryness in my right eye. I was given "Systane Ultra" drops which has largely cleared away most of the constant feeling but the eyelash feeling is still here just not nearly as bad.

The second week of problems was around the time (april 1) I posted on lasermyeye.com about worsening starbursts and now night ghosting in my left eye. The Ghosting I think is a very new problem because I am a VERY observant person and from June/08 - 1 month ago ive been paintballing, on vacation, to movies etc.. and never noticed ghosting which at present only seems to occur at night, or with white text on a black background, the moon and white lettered signs at night with a light behind it such as a fast food sign, floaters in my left eye bother me more and glare off objects turn into starbursts. 2 weeks ago when I had a full eye exam since I have prior retina stretching i was informed there was no rips or holes in my retina, i will discuss this again tomorrow.

How & Why I think this is Lasik related - I had read stories that people got such dry eye from Lasik they couldnt start fires or spray perfume because it messed with their eyes. My theory* is that the direct heat on my face from the multiple grills/fryers/toasters/ovens then the passive heat and emanating smoke has triggered something in which I dont know is permanent or just a reaction to my work environment. There is 1 other thing, in the past month when my nose gets dry my eyes star to hurt, this is more apparent when i do physical activity so I usaully have Nasal mist with me, however this could all be pure chance all of a sudden its a problem or lasik is involved.

When I see my eye doctor tomorrow (april 15) I am going to discuss about RGP lenses for my eyes and other possible treatments or doctors to try but perhaps I dont know/am not asking the right questions and perhaps someone can shed some insight for me.

If there is any questions for me please ask, Im open to anything. At present I feel largely robbed of my life (being 19 years old now) especially since I still have plans BUT since talking with post-lasik people my depressive/suicidal thoughts have largely gone away but still finding it hard to cope. On lasermyeye someone forwarded me the website of a Canadian (I am in canada) Post-lasik doctor who helps with post-lasik complications but he is located across the country and from emails I have to prove i cant get help in my city before he does it pro-bono, I want to exhaust resources in my city before I fly to see him.

It should also be noted that for years ive taken salmon and fish oils and in the past few months Flaxseed oil. However this happens to be by pure chance it has the ability to help with dry eye for I started taking it for my Physical training.

    hello

Dry eyes and painful every day eyes have a true negative impact on the quality of life - The problem is the only ones that can sympatize are the ones who have it -

I also believe the work environment you are in is hindering your eyes - I find smoke and flourescent lights - kill my eyes - And I know I have had this since I was 16 - I am 49 now - so for you my friend there is hope - just hang in there....

    Suicide is not an option

According to the doctors I dont have Dry eye and up until i started the fast food job I hadnt put any concern into Lasik-Complications. However im really happy to see that you can understand about my theory of my work environment
Also, in my opinion being born with something/developing it is slightly easier to live with rather than knowing its induced and is totally unnecessary to have (like Lasik) knowing once the eyes were normal

      Thanks for the response

        progressive ghosting

        Hi there...
If you have progressive ghosting, then in my opinion, it's almost certain you're having an early case of keratoconus (sometimes called ectasia when it presents after LASIK, which might or might not be causative..it's almost not worth stressing over...lots of people get keratoconus without LASIK). I would insist on getting a topography and then going in every 4-6 months or so, to get difference maps to see if there's any progression indicative of keratoconus.

The good news is that chances are it will remain an early/mild case..i.e it won't be like the descriptions of more moderate/severe cases that dominate the descriptions you'll find on the web.

For early/mild cases, glasses will help (I would definitely get a prescription). In some ways, post-LASIK cases of keratoconus are fairly striking because you can actually see something uncorrected...most keratoconus patients are fairly myopic (as you probably once were), so they never really see the ghosting. A case as mild as yours...that patient wouldn't be even told they have some keratoconus...they'll just be told they have astigmatism.

Now, when one has underlying irregularity, and incidences of dry eye will exacerbate the irregularity...so you'll definitely notice it more when your eyes are dry. But dry eye doesn't generally cause ghosting.

          Hi.

Just got back from my eye doctor. I have always had pre-existing retina stretching in my eye, its a condition that begins with an V. I was told my left eye now has additional stretching which could explain the increased floaters.

I talked with my eye doctor about ectasia and she told me she doesnt have the machine, however if my Lasik center wont do it for me she'll refer me to a specialist who can do the test for me.

She's always been very helpful answering all my questions and giving me help. She also said all my irritation/dryness has cleared up since using the drops, yet I still have the eye pain which she'll follow up after 3 weeks.

            Hi, east12 --

Perhaps your doctor said that you have a tendency for PVD?
            Posterior Vitreous Detachment?
It is usually signaled by increased "floaters" or "flashers" or lots of dots suddenly showing up like a "veil" as you look out of your eye(s).
PVD is a stretching at the back of the eye (the "retina"), which can -- if not treated in time -- lead to total retinal detachment, and perhaps permanent eye damage.

If you search on LaserMyEye, you will see that I have had two incidents of PVD, one in each eye, post-Lasik.
            < But I am a lot, and I mean, a LOT older than you -- > .
Happily, my problems were caught on time and treated on time.
The subsequent treatment by a retinal specialist protected my vision.
Over time those pesky floaters have diminished, and the other symptoms have not returned.

I think it's great that you have such a good and attentive eye doctor.
            Please keep posting.
(And remember to write down exactly what your doctor says, or else ask for a copy of your records for the day, okay? You deserve more than a "V" as a diagnosis, right?)
You seem like a methodical problem-solver, and I'm willing to bet that you will figure this out before long. . . after which you will have a long, full, happy life ahead to enjoy.

              Thanks for the replies

I find a warm cloth on my eyes helps the pain and itchy/sore feelings more than any drops do (most drops make it worse). After a few hours the pain largely goes away with use of the warm cloth.

I hope you're right, and that I figure this out.
