  • One for the Men...

Next time i go to see my doctor (3x month checkups due to anti-depressents) id like to ask her a question between (now dont laugh, it's probably a co-incidence? but i'd just like her to dismiss this as a possibility) the possibility of a male (me!) ageing, mid-life and natural drop in testosterone playing a part in my dry eyes .. For example. I used to shave my face every 3 days (my wife likes the stubble look-lol) after 3x days i then started to look like the wolf man.
Now i shave once a week (sunday incase you're wondering?).. This caper and dry eyes, or realising i had it both came along roughly the same time aged 39.. My all round fitness levels have NOT suddenly plummeted, still a mean lean fighting machine-lol..I aint changed (to look at) since i was 21.
I work with over a 100 guys, and the ones my age, and older, joke about 'other things' slowing down also...
In women, when they go through 'the change' its known that, that triggers dry eyes in lots of women. Can something similair happen to guys??...
I know absolutely nothing about the human body, so dont even know how to approach this one with my doctor. Last thing i want is her thinking i've gone doo-lally and up my dosage on the happy pills, or prescribing me a false beard, and some viagra..

    Manopause. Yes, it's real.
Your estrogen levels might be a bit higher causing an imbalance in the testosterone/estrogen ratio, or your testosterone might have dropped. Testosterone is important factor in dry eye. You might ask to have your hormone levels tested.

      Thank you very much.
Am going to print this page off, and show my doctor when I go again.
If anyone has any more information, that would also be well appreciated.

This article is from 2007. It explains adropause, a drop in testosterone. But there is also the possibility of increased estrogen. It may be something you produce or you may be consuming food that contains estrogen, e.g. beef and other animals that are fed estrogen. Soy is also high in phytoestrogens. There are estrogen suppressors. You might consider seeing a doctor who specializes in hormone replacement therapy or anti-aging or a naturopath. Either way, IMO, you'd need to have your hormone levels tested.

Thanks so much for taking the time for writing all this up for me.
Won't do any harm for me to ask about this.

Oh, and the term 'MANopause' did initially sneak past me. That was funny, unless it was some sort of spectacular typo ?. Lol..o

If I were you, I wouldn't ever mention to a doctor that you got an idea from a forum hehe... for most of them, it raises all sorts of red flags causing them to assume the info much be wrong if you just "found it on an internet forum" (ie. a recipe to have your suggestion dismissed by them) - avoid this at all costs

So, armed with this theory, I'd look for studies off more official types of websites - mayo clinic, PubMed, medical journals etc. Then, if you want to bring along something to show him/her, show him that stuff... just don't show him/her anything from a forum like this.

You can get started by looking here:
            http://www.tearfilm.org/dewsreport/p...DEWS-noAds.pdf

Start with the chapter on causes of dry eye - maybe it'll mention something related to male hormones that would be of use to you at your next dr's visit. I've never looked for that kind of info in there for myself, so don't know if it's in there... but it's worth looking just in case!

Not a typo ;-).... I learned the term from my husband. He is going through treatment right now with a DO we both like.
Also, SAAG is right. Best to find some peer reviewed articles. The link I gave may help you with some search terms.

                Happy New Year!
