The problem with hot compresses is that they lose their temperature rapidly and therefore do not provide the steady heat that is required to dissolve tough obstructions - don't get my wrong, they are fine for mild obstructions but not enough for severe ones.

I made small cloth "bean bags" (approximately 4 inches square, one for each eye) filled with dried beans. I then heat them in the microwave for approximately 75 seconds. The beans hold the heat for nearly 10 minutes. I would agree that the standard moist hot facecloth does not sufficiently hold the heat, but my bean bags seem to do the trick. I have one set at home and one set for the office.

        holding heat

I read or heard (poor memory!!!) that eggs hold their heat the longest. You can re-use the eggs over and over as compresses (wrap them in a wet cloth).
