How severe is Blepharitis/MGD pain exactly?

The same thing most of my doctors said.

However, I think there are many kinds of bleph. From my experiences, most doctors don't know or want to find the real cause of bleph and treat it from the root cause.

They just use standard treatments for all kinds of Bleph, which are ineffective treatments (I think). That's why we are still suffer from Dry eye.

My Dr doesn't think the blepharitis looks severe enough to put me on oral antibiotics.

Also, apparently the pain I'm describing ('intense burning, like I have acid in my eye') is too severe to be caused by the blepharitis or dry eye.

Is it your GP who refuses to put you on antibiotics or is it an eye specialist? My GP is great but she accepts the limits to her knowledge. She's happy to prescribe antibiotics because the specialist has written, advising her to do this.

The doctor's comment on the intense burning; I've had that reaction too. I resorted to extreme graphic imagery to describe my discomfort. Acid in the eye was one such description - as was vinegar, eyes being stitched closed with twine (sorry - that is a mild version of it). I just needed them to imagine it was their pain - several winced when I went through the `list'.

You must persist in getting this taken seriously. I cannot comment on the anti-depressant; I know it helps some people but it made me feel drowsy so discontinued. It was well intentioned on the part of my GP.

I sometimes wonder what the doctors or opthamologists would do in my position.

They would be exactly the same!

When I attended NHS clinics, I was often added to the list of the `key person' - otherwise known as the Head of Department. He told me that he knew what I was going through because he had a `bit of dry eye' himself. (Didn't we have so much in common?)

Any respect I had for his position vanished at that point.

I've been having blepharitis for about 10 months now. In the first few months, there were no doctors that had managed to pick up the problem. Finally, one doctor managed to diagnose it and he prescribed fucithalmic acid for me. That is an antibiotic eye drop. That helped to reduce the redness and some of the discomfort i had experienced.

On another occasion, I had another eye doctor who kept denying that i had dry eyes and told me they looked fine over the slit lamp. I went to another doctor after a few months which confirmed that my TBUT and Schirmer's scores were indeed low. I do feel you do need to get a few opinions if none of the doctors have yet properly treated it.

I have very red veiny eyes and very bad burning eyes as well although i do not know if it is due to the blepharitis itself. I also have glaucoma so i do use glaucoma eye drops which contains BAK as a preservative. I do think that the burning sensation is probably a combination of things. But the burning can get quite bad for me.

In addition, I also later developed sinus issues and became more allergic with hives on my eyelids. I do not know if the hives and sinus issue are a result of the blepharitis causing allergic reactions. Just thought i would point that out just in case u are experiencing the same thing.
