  • Advice for new member

I would like general advice if you all have any. I'm a male in early 30s. Diagnosed with Belpharitis and dry eye (10mm and 14mm Schirmer's). My Optho tells me that my eyelids don't close all the way near the edges. My wife and mother tell me that they used to but stopped about 5 years ago. Has anyone else had this experience? He tells me that he's never heard of this happening before. I use a CPAP so couldn't use Tranquileyes but am using the Quartz goggles with some success. In April I couldn't sleep a full night about half the nights and at least now they're just irritated sometimes in the morning. No luck with lacri-lube or preservative-free drops. My Optho wants me to try Restasis so I've been on Lotemax for 1 week to transition. Any other suggestions? I'm also curious to know what other conditions these types of problems can be related to as I have some other issues and would like to know if there's a connection in either direction. Thanks!

Please take my thoughts/advice with a grain of salt. I'm no expert and I have some rare disorders so tend to think in those terms! I do wonder if there's an odd connective tissue disorder that causes the skin to not be as stretchy and flexible as it should be. Disorders like that are incredibly hard to diagnose and you'd have other odd symptoms in other body parts, not just eyes. I have wierd muscle tightness and muscle spasms in my face, and don't sleep well, if I don't take Magnesium supplements, but I'm not a good "standard" and do have unusual systemic health issues. I don't know if it's safe to take Mg if you have sleep apnea. Not something to try without talking with a doctor. Feel free to "private message" me with questions, but don't expect a real quick response. I don't check mail daily.

I also wonder if a more common problem, hyperthyroid or Grave's disease could do that because the eyes tend to be a little pronounced or large for the lids. But I'd assume they already gave you all those thyroid blood tests. I think there's a set of 3 or 4 thyroid tests they use together.

Does the CPAP gizmo fit near your eyes? Could it have "trained" the lid not to close, by getting in it's way?

If you haven't already tried Refresh PM, I suggest trying it. I didn't get any help from Lacri-lube, but I love my Refresh PM. And make sure to use enough of it. You can be pretty generous with the amount of goo you squeeze in. I initially wasn't using enough. More is better for me.

I hope you get some suggestions from "normal" people as well.

    Mary
