why did the derm swab the nose
This was a paediatric super-derm to whom I am very grateful for the work-up. She very kindly gave LM (daughter with ocular rosacea) a bit of investigation just in case there was something everyone else had missed: blood tests, nose swab, skin swab, close lens examination. We used Bactroban to annihilate Staph Aureus in the nose, just in case it calmed the acne rosacea, which is entirely periorificial, and the beginnings of rhinophyma. This was worth a try but didn't work. Everyone has Staph Aureus on the skin and in the nose but LM is possibly hypersensitive to the products of bacteria, is one theory, esp in overgrowth, or has compromised defences. We have to use erythromycin and an OTC antibacterial wash for control now. Again, she was surprised the ophth don't do this basic stuff, esp in a chronic undiagnosed blepharitis case.
