  • overactive neutrophils a factor in DES?

Some experts in the rosacea community believe that rosacea is a disorder of overactive neutrophils - our immune system in our facial skin thinks it's under attack and sends inflammatory neutrophils that destroy blood vessels and skin cells.

Now there is a study that links neutrophils to dry eye inflammation: http://www.iovs.org/content/53/13/8264.full

Roxithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that decreases damaging neutrophils.

Has anyone here ever been on this antibiotic and noticed an effect on their DES?

I completely agree with this. I think this is what is happening in my case. I have bad inflammation and ive ruled out allergies. And do not think i have underlying auto immune. So Ocular rosacea is the only explanation left. The inflammation is on my inner eyelids (it seems auto immune) because it will get better when im sick. I think CHRONIC inflammation that effects the eyes and face is down to the same mechanism. Ocular rosacea plays a bigger role in Dry eye (particulary MG disease) than people realise and im waiting for researchers to cotten on to this.

If i had some sort of auto immune problem that would expain my severe dry eye, because i havent had lasik, im young , and i didnt wear contacts for long before i got dry eye.

Oh my last eye doctor said that dry eye and ocular rosacea are basically the same thing.

This was when i asked whether i had ocular rosacea.

I agree on the most part as i think the mechanisms that occur (auto immune inflammation) in rosacea are the same that occur in various places of the eye, be it the eyelids, eye surface or the lacrimal glands and it all causes dry eye. MGD or aqueous or both.

I do think that when its ''mild'' inflammation it is easier to reverse though, and may not be chronic as is the case with alot of severe dry eye.
