  • IPL (Intense Pulse Light) in Europe

    Hallo

Iīm suffering since 3 years from dry eyes (MGD - some doctors say MGD plus blepharitis). Iīve posted only a view times on this forum, but reading on it for more than two years. First of all thanks everybody for supporting all the people here, and giving hope for a better future! It really means a lot, due to the fact that nobody in real life who doesīt suffer from dry eyes canīt understand our horrible situation.

I am 24 years old and donīt want to spend my life like this. It is horrible, but I think you all can very good understand me. I tried almost everything from drops, manuka honey, triphala ghritam, acupuncture, hot compresses, and some other stuff. Nothing really worked (except of thriphala ghritam but only for a while).

Now I ve heard so many good things about IPL and really wanna give it a try, but the only bad thing about it is, that I can't find it anywhere except of the US. The next point are the costs. If I have to go to the US for a month to get treated I would need a bunch of money I can't afford.

Is there somebody who experienced similar or has any ideas if there is/will be IPL available in Europe? Or should I contact IPL specialists in the US? I really donīt know what to do

    thanks a lot
    and take care

    Hi Bojan,

There is a company called e-swin based near Paris that is now producing IPL machines specifically targeted for use on MGD patients. Apparently there is at least one doctor in Paris using the device.

Can you speak French? I'm in London and I'm interested in trying this device but haven't been able to find out where the treatment is being offered so please let me know if you do.

    Cheers

The link in my message to you wouldn't work. This is a link to Duke University Eye.
I keep losing my posts! And dropped off the forum while reading the forum.

            Bojan,
IPL isn't a one time treatment. I was seen by a doctor who specializes in dry eye caused by MGD & Ocular Rosacea.

This is what I was told: One treatment every four weeks for four months. The results after four months lasts about one year, then the IPL treatment(s) are repeated indefinitely (forever!).

Each treatment session (under both eyes) here in North Carolina, USA costs $400.00. You need four treatments sessions per year. That's $1,600.00 US Dollars!

              Hi Bojan89,

This may be a bit late for you, but I recently had IPL in London at the Dry Eye Centre and it changed my life. I'm in a similar position in that I'm 28 and have had serious issues with dry eyes for about 4-5 years now. I was told years ago by an optician in Leeds that I have meibomian gland dysfunction and I should use an eyebag and wipes. That made basically no difference at all so I stopped that before too long. He then fitted me with scleral lenses, but because of my deep-set eyes I couldn't manage to get them in by myself (despite 3 hours of lessons!!). So throughout university I was basically going through 2 boxes of lubricating eye-drops a week (expensive solution).

I moved to London last year and now work in an air-conditioned office. It was almost unbearable. I found the dry eye centre while looking for another opticians to fit me with scleral lenses (as I thought this was the only solution). I saw Caroline Hodd who did a Lipiview and discovered the thickness of my lipid layer was only half what it should be.. After explaining about the IPL, she did the first treatment on me then and there. She then squeezed the glands and what came out was disgusting! She actually recorded it and from each gland came a massive string of thick, cheesy gunk. Like squeezing a super satisfying spot.

I felt relief after the first treatment, but it was after the second one that my glands were functioning properly again and producing enough oil. I had my last treatment (out of 4) about 6 weeks ago now and my eyes feel great. I really thought I was stuck with needing drops for the rest of my life.

I will keep you updated as to how it works out long-term, but for now I couldn’t recommend it enough.

In case you are interested, the website is: www.dryeyecentre.co.uk

I hope this helps and good luck!

That sounds very promising but wow ! 600 GBP for 4 treatments, that's something I can't afford. Does anyone know about IPL in Germany or Austria? These countries are closer for me and the treatment might be cheaper there.

It was a bit of a sting I'll give you that, but if the results stick around long-term it'll be well worth every penny! I also noticed that it seems to be quite a bit more expensive in the US.

I'm getting quite into this forum writing/searching and I'm looking out to see how other people got on with this treatment, so if hear about anyone performing IPL closer to you I will get back to you.

                  Good luck with everything!

For us living in Scandinavia, anyone know anything about this, perhaps the Dry Eye Clinic in Oslo? I think they have started with Lipiflow treatments even.

This IPL reminds me of an article I read by a physical therapist who found that when administering PT to clients in conjunction with Far Infrared, he found that the FIR actually melted their myofascia, so they became cured much more easily.
