Would changing over to the Azasite be a better option with fewer systemic
side effects? And could it possibly be more effective than oral antibiotics since it is applied directly to the source of the problem?

I would say Azasite is an alternative option that definitely has fewer systemic side effects and may be a better option and should be discussed with your doctor. The results can vary with that med, but I feel it is worth trying. You are lucky, because even if it fails, you can revert back to a treatment that does work well for you.
