  • Blepharitis / Anti-Depressant connection?

    Hi

I have been taking Fluoxetine 20mg tablets for Post Natal Depression since around October.

My Doctor says that these would not cause my dry eye/Blepharitis. Do you agree? I have seen on lots of places on the net where they say anti-depressants contribute to dry eyes.

I would be interested in hearing anybodies stories on the same subject

    Thanks
    Lorraine

They made my dry eye really bad, well i think they did (was either that or ortho k lenses), so they definitely do cause dry eye!

      Wow, now I'm really scared!

My psychologist prescribed me Fluoxetine 20mg 2 and a half years before.
I've only taken a few of them for 2 or 3 months (from May till July of 2006).

In November 2006 they diagnosed dry eyes, and from that time on it has become worse and worse.

I haven't been diagnosed properly yet, but I'm convinced that there must be a conncection between dry eyes and Fluoxetine!

        Hi

I am not saying there definitely is but..... on the net it does say some anti-depressants cause dry eye and of course everybody is individual.

What made me think of it is that I started taking them in October 2008, and just after that say 2 or 3 weeks, my dry eyes started! I was told by my doctor that they take areound 2 weeks to get into your system!

I am seeing him in a weeks time to come off them

          Hello

          Hi.
I am on Fluoxetine 20mg too since about August 2003. I did not get dry eye until November 2005. I have read that Fluoxetine doesn't cause dry eye and elsewhere that says it can.
Easy enough to stop taking them and see if the dry eye gets better.
I think there is a medical database whereby if a patient reports ANY side effect with a drug then their doctor must report it to the database. This is why many drugs have a long list of side effects.
In my opinion you have to look at WHY a certain drug would cause dry eye. For instance Accutane is very obvious because it drys out many parts of the body. Fluoxetine is an SSRI so you may ask how seratonin uptake can possibly cause dry eye?
          Regards.

I've learned to never rule anything out regarding the fact that any given drug might cause a side effect for any given person. Generally speaking, though, antidepressants that typically cause dry eyes are those that have a high anticholinergic side effect profile. This includes primarily the tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline, nortripyline, impramine, despiramine, etc.. SSRI antidepressants like fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), fluvoxamine (Luvox), generally don't cause dry eyes.

              Fluoxetine causes dry eyes

              Hello,

Fluoxetine causes dry eye. Im positive.

I take 10 mg a day and since I started, my eyes are so dry ! Plus I have read in several places it can cause dry eyes, eye pain, mydriasis, problems in the eyelids...
I dont have the links here, but you can try gogling something like "fluoxetine and eyes", if you dont find them let me know, I might have booked the links in my computer.

              Greetings !

Yes my eyes turned into moderate/severe dry eye about 3 weeks/ 1 month after being on antidepressants. I had mild dry eye before that- i couldnt wear contacts, but it was never an problem as long as i didnt have the contacts in. I still put the trigger down to anti depressants.

My understanding is any antidepressant can cause dry eye, if the person has the condition to start with, it will make it worse. If you arent prone to dry eye, you will be fine.

I don't doubt anyone who says that a drug caused their dry eyes. I was just pointing out that SSRI's are much less likely than TCA's.

                    Update

                    Hi

Following on from my first post, I just thought I would update.

It is very early days for sure, however, I have significantly reduced my flueoxitine with a view to coming off them. I am now nearing the end of my second week and can feel and see a slight improvement with my eyes already.

                    Lets hope it continues
