  • Protopic Treatment Log

Despite the cancer concerns I've decided to give Protopic a try based on conversations with persons on other forums who have used Protopic to successfully treat blepharitis. Last night I applied a very small amount (using q-tip aka cotton bud) to my lid margin, making careful not to apply past (inside) the eyelashes.

I was told to expect redness and burning for up to 24 hours after applying the Protopic and that I should apply approximately every 3-5 days for good results. So far my experience has been exactly that. I will keep everyone updated with my results.

Protopic is an ointment used to treat eczema. It has off-label applications in the treatment of atopic blepharitis (bleph caused by atopic dermatitis aka excema). You can read more about it here:

Yes I have used Azasite - didn't like it because each bottle is expensive and only lasts a week - not enough benefit for the price/trouble in my opinion.

        Thanks brighteyes,
Did you find benefit from azsite?

Its weird coz i managed to make mine last 1 month and that's twice a day, id didnt put loads over the eyelashes however. I realised even though the bottle seems like its empty, if you bang it upside down with lid on- quite abit more will come out- i think its the nature of the vehicle its in.

Anyway it didn't improve it for the time i was on it anyway, although it did help some, i dont think blepth or bacteria is causing the MGD thats prob why.

Hmm, I've been using protopic on the face and if i get it anywhere near my periocular tissue (even where the skin becomes more thick like your face skin) it seems to aggervate my anterior blepharitis and even the posterior in the short term. Admitidely the trial has been short. I've started using a wet tissue to wipe it off.

My problem is I want to get all the skin uninflamed up to where it is considered blepharitis (like where your cheek meets your eye-think big smile) but it seems like for me that even on the thicker skin it is actually flaring the blepharitis.

The azasite is the only thing I have had access to that treats those tissues and does not make that area feel all ewwwy. But yea like you said I go through a bottle in like 7 to 10 days or something.

And for night time I am not sure. Maybe just before bed use it is ok for those tissues? I need to test that but I know with the MGD you have to be careful with ointments and such cause they will migrate there. At the same time so will the tacrolimus so who knows.

No irritation/yucky feeling for you though?

Which is it? Is it what you know or who you know? Or is it how well you convey what you know to who you know it to?

Hey MGD - I haven't used it on my skin (yet). I have some skin issues going on but don't think it's eczema (think its rosacea but 5 derms said no). I've only applied it once to my lid margins and that was last night - my eyes were definitely red and warm (almost burning) all day, but no dryness. I expect it will take at least a few weeks to come to any sort of conclusion.
