  • Blepharitis/ocular rosacea and plugs

I got puntal plugs put in 3 months ago before I found a doctor who gave me the correct diagnosis of ocular rosacea and blepharitis. I have found that my eyes itch a lot and are more uncomfortable since putting the plugs in, though I can see better. Has anyone heard of plugs not being good with blepharitis and rosacea? I am currently taking doxy and azasite, but am worried that the plugs may just make my symptoms worse rather than better.

There seems to be some debate about this amoung the medical professionals.

One camp belives the plugs trap all teh inflammation and nasty stuff in the eye, leading to a cess pool type of situation, and the other camp seems to beleive that the plugs help.

I have plugs in from my lasik Dr., who refused and still refuses to accept there is a problem with my eyes. My new DE Dr. says he is on the fence about the plugs in my eyes, but says to leave them and see how things work out.

You can probably google this question to get some medical opinions on this, but some people on this site with your conf=dition have plugs and others don't...wish someone would do some indept research on this!!

Plugs are used as adjunct therapy by dry eye specialists. They are not appropriate for all dry eye suffers. You might post this question to Dr. Latkany in his Q & A forum.

I learned today from a DES specialist that plugs are generally not beneficial for people who have inflammatory dry eye. It sounds like you got part of the diagnosis, but ocular rosacea is an inflammatory condition. This might require additional treatment like Restasis or a steroid drop.
