  • Eye twitching & MGD/Bleph

Does eye twitching go hand in hand with MGD and/or Bleph? I've noticed that whenever my eye starts watering that I also have the twitching, although it happens so close together that I can't tell which comes first. And does anyone know why this happens?

    Catlover -

These are called blepharospasms. I too suffered from these when my MGD was at its ugliest, most uncontrolled state. However since getting much progress from oral doxy primarily, then Omega 3's and Ocusoft pads, I no longer have them. I believe that they are a short-circuited blink response to eye surface irritation and inflammation.

Gretchen, I am undergoing the same treatment. Mine started a couple of months ago and I have been doing everything possible to get it under control. It is ALOT better now. I haven't worn contacts or eye makeup since I found out I had mgd/bleph but that's ok. As long as I can get back to normal. I haven't had any twitching for about 3 days now.

Same with me - when I had acute blepharitis from MGD, my eyelids were twitching like crazy. As things have settled down with restasis, doxy, eye protection, etc., the twitching has gone away. Except for after the third cup of coffee that is!

Yeah I think Gretchen is right on. My doctor told me that it was inflammation around a particular nerve that caused the twitching. I also noticed that when I get really stressed out the twitching starts up again. So I try not to get stressed out cause the twitching can get really annoying sometimes.

I agree about the stress. My eye does so much better when I'm relaxed.

I agree that they are related. Years ago, before I realized that having red eyes all the time was a problem, I was having eyelid twitches, but I thought it was my eyeball that was twitching. I ended up seeing a nuerologist and an Opthalmologist. Fortunately, the problem actually happened when I was seeing the nuero, and he immediately diagnosed it as eyelid twitches, which he said were benign. I left it at that...
