  • Is it possible to know the cause of MGD?

I'm wondering if is caused by lack of oil OR the oil becoming too thick. I would think the reason is important b/c you would know how to treat it. How can you find out?

All you need is a decent examination. They can look at the glands and press on them. If there's no oil, they won't see any, if there's thick oil plugging the gland orifices, that's what they'll see.

Next time you're in the doc's office, ask him/her to press on the glands and ask what they see. Is there oil? Is it clear & runny? Is it thick & stuck in the gland orifices?

      Meiobian gland oil

So what does it mean if a Dr. says, "Very little oil is coming out." I've had a Dr. tell me that but I didn't know if that was good or bad.. I'm guessing bad?
I've also had Dr's tell me "the glands look fine." But, I don't have much faith in ANY of them. I am the one who had to ask if I have MGD. Nobody seems to know and I've been to many.. So frustrating!!
I guess I may have to just bit the bullet and see Dr. Latkany. Unfortunatley he is not on my insurance and office visit is $400

I feel your pain. I had to ask what I had also. The only thing I was told was I needed to get my glands unblocked and do warm compresses. If I lived closer to Dr. L, I would go there, insurance or no insurance.

I've always suspected that the cause is allergy. Your eyelids are experiencing an allergic reaction, making them inflamed. When they're irritated, the MG's don't do what they are supposed to do.

If you go see an allergist, he'll probably tell you the same thing....
