  • Broken blood vessel

I have always suffered from eye-redness, but boy, did I get a shock last Sunday when I woke up with a broken blood vessel in my right eye. It's taking some time to heal, but now my "normal red eyes" seem much better in comparison to this!! ugh!
I teach, and so I've been having to wear tinted glasses to school. I hope this incident isn't due to the anti-inflammatory supplements I have been taking, as I've read that they can thin the blood.

Is your eye where the broken blood vessel is, more painful than usual?
When this happened to me, I also had pretty bad pain in the affected eye, and it turned out that I have "episcleritis"-- the main symptom of this condition is the broken blood vessel.
Generally, people with inflamatory conditions of the eyes get this. It also needs to be seen by a doctor and treated. If I were you, I would have it checked with my doctor.I advise you not to wait for it to "heal" on its own.

Actually, no, there is absolutley no pain at all. I appreciate your input, as I have been wondering if this is something that happens to people with inflammatory eye problems. It seems that we have a vein weakness, or something.

Still you should get it checked to rule out episcleritis. It is not a very serious condition, just inflammation of the so-called "epi-sclera" of the eye, but needs to be treated, as otherwise it might start recurring and produce permanent "bruises" on the white of the eye.
I was given some drops for it, but cannot remember the name right now, i think it as some sort of a combination of steroid with something else.

My husband -who has never had dry eyes - suddenly got a very bright red eye ,went to his doctor who told him it was a burst blood vessel and it was harmless and would go away but refered him to the eye specialist at the hospital basically to reassure him
The ophthalmo at the hospital confirmed that it was harmless and would go away --- and it did

Thank you for the reassurance. Mine is going away; ironically, my previously red eye condition looks so much better than this broken vessel condition. I guess things have to get worse before you can appreciate what was there before.
