  • Would it help if you knew the cause?.

18 months later, i'm sure i now know the reason. And it does feel better mentally now it's no-longer a mystery and i'm blaming it on myself..
Mine started January 2011.. I shot a piece of tile into my eye via a motor saw, it was not bad and my eye rejected it to nasal corner as it should.
However it did cause an ebrasion, now in normal circumstances it would go/heal in a day or two. Trouble is, my tear production was and has for a long time been low, coupled with the coldest winter we had for a generation -7 (during the day) then the chill factor we get. My eye could not heal and right enough it felt like something was in there all the time, i now know to be 'an ebrasion' it would re-appear the next day like ground hog day.
Always the same spot (right lower) the weather conditions were going against me, along with my then driving job(not blinking enough) then the mental downward spiral kicked in as this is truly awful when it starts/just comes from nowhere...
It was over 6 months before the re-occuring ebrasion stopped, and i reckon this was due to better summer conditions plus off work for 11 weeks(depression). REST!!.
I've always known about my photophobia, as at night i would have to look away when a car stopped in front of me in traffic, rear brake lights would be like fog lights to me.. Im now pretty sure that my dryeye was already there, just not enough (thankfully) for to me to have realise it. It took an ebrasion from a 'foreign object' which i could not naturally repair for all this to come to a head.
Mentaly Going backwards at speed i think is also a big/bad contributer!... Many people have said "all this started when i damaged my eye with ____? OR ______".
Maybe you did'nt? and dry eye was a time bomb waiting to go off?.
The eye specialists i have seen all said "the piece of tile was a co-incidence" but how are you supposed to belive that? when it all started on the same day!. Would have made the world of difference to me if one of the Opthamolagists had explained 'the co-incidence' to me... Avoiding me pumping in every known eye drop this side of the moon telling me i had Bleph didn't help much either- more battering my eyes with over zealous massaging and lid scrubs! they even wrongly put me on Doxycycline..
For some reason, i can't explain, i do feel better now that im sure i did not do this by being foolish and not wearing safety glasses.
And for the record, my own symptoms are getting so much better, with what i think is vital, i gave my eyes a real rest and avoided driving, watching tv etc i'm now at the stage where i no-longer use drops!! and instead close my eyes and 'rest them' if they start to feel bad instead of using drops.
I will always have to 'manage them' as in first awaking first thing in the morning, and avoiding air-conditioning or heating, but im on the right side of the line now, the depression (severe) and anxiety have virtualy GONE!.
If at all possible you have the correct working enviroment etc, have you tried GRADUALLY !! reducing the amount of drops you use? is it possible to train your eyes to work for you? over use of drops, do your eyes then live within the current enviroment you set?- you adding lots of moisture so eyes sensing not needed to produde as much tears or oil? less artificail tears, could it be the eyes sense then reacting that they need to start producing more ?.
I know this is not for everyone, and most people have a chronic diagnosis; but i do read of forum users getting discharged as the opthamolagist can like myself find nothing major wrong?. If this is similair to your story? things could well improve to a level of some normaility.....

So glad you reached a point where you are feeling better, Colin. I also believe that the onset of my chronic dry eye was not sudden; I became more aware of it when it crossed a threshhold. I'm pretty sure that mine is hormone-related (I'm a post-menopausal woman), and it got worse with time. It started at least 5 years ago with blurry vision after reading for a while, but I was not aware that it was caused by DES. Then within the last year it progressed to photo-sensitivity and about 6 months ago, my eyes got a gritty feeling. That is when I was diagnosed with dry eye. I agree that the treatment is incremental too. It is something you live with, and the symptoms wax and wane, influenced by both external and internal variables. I'm not yet at the point where you are, but I am hoping to get there.

Hey Jude! I've said, many times on here, that i was the worst worrier ever and there was no-hope for the future, at no-stage did i ever relax and stop worrying, so if i can 'regain a life' and symptom improvement, i'm damn sure we all can!.
