  • Quotes I'd rather forget. What soundbites do you recall?

"The good news is it is not serious"

On being diagnosed with dry eye blepharitis by the eye specialist. How wrong she was.

"It doesn't look that dry to me"

    and

"Sometimes in life if some jobs don't suit us we have to find something else"

On visiting the doctor with anxiety that I may not be able to continue working using screens in my day job. So a non-screen based job would not result in my eyes being itchy, dry or the need for me to wear padded glasses with.

I'd love to hear some of your infamous quotes which you'll never forget.

'How do you know all this? Are you a struck-off GP?'
And taken aside for warning by assistant, 'If you don't stop seeing other doctors, he will refuse treatment' (after trip to ER)
'Children don't get rosacea' (dermatology professor to room of post-grads after I'd just done talk, shown photographs of damaged eye surface, and child sitting in front of them with flared up, painful face).
And my personal favourite, texting on mobile phone throughout our consultation while talking to us

Thanks, khmeida, good idea, very cathartic.

Very good littlemermaid. The universe might not be infinite we don't know, but one thing we can be sure of is - human stupidity!

You reminded me. I also go the 'Are you a doctor' soundbite. Can't recall in response to what I said though.

The other good one was when I requested the various tests 'tear break up etc' and she said that the 'tests are pointless at the end of the day if it is dry eye it is dry eye'. I never have any tests done to date.

Oh I actually forgot two other great soundbites

        Person 1

        - Speaking with an fellow employee about my condition the employee told me randomly one day that they were experiencing 'eyes quite dry for some reason'. The person wore contacts. The next day I saw the person and they said that they were feeling better today. They said this in a 'phewww that was close' way and added 'don't want to end up with dry eye!'.

I was thinking 'no you wouldn't unlike myself who as you know has it for years and it looks pretty chronic - but I'm delighted for you!'. I was gobsmacked and shocked at the lack of consideration.

        Person 2

On telling them about my condition and saying that it was a real 'hell' and that I have to do routine things like compresses etc. The reason I started this conversation was to explain why I was wearing my moisture protection glasses (they are dark tinted) on a dull day. I then added that sometimes if I was in a restaurant and there was a breeze I'd have to put them on to help the irritation. The person then shockingly said (laughing) 'oh now if my partner did that I'd have to walk out'. 'No I couldn't stand that'. I was shocked and thought 'but you are talking to me who has to wear them NOT by my choice!'.

          Acquaintances:
          • "Have you tried eyedrops?"
          • "Do you use eyedrops?"
          • "Have you tried those drops on TV?"

          Doctors:
          • "You should have Lipiflow done. Your glands are quite blocked"
          • One month later from a different doctor: "You don't need Lipiflow done. Your glands don't look that bad."
          • "I have dry eye too" (but they do not need goggles, their tear film is still good, it doesn't hurt nor does it impact their quality of life. I am GLAD it doesn't bother them, but don't compare your situation to mine. Our experiences are vastly different.)
          • "Do you use drops?"

Ive studied dry eyes so much I could be a doctor. Anyway the first doctor just did a tbt, result i think was a 9. No problem. So went for 2nd opinion. She actually looked at my lids and said I have blocked glands, oil is slightly thick etc. Ok so I go back to my original doctor, your glands are open now.. this was one week later,ha ha. So I then went to an opthamologist after waiting a month and a half,he had a condescending attitude gave me a total of 10 minutes. I asked if any of my glands had atrophied,he said the glands dont do that..oh really. Better use google. Anyway,I took my husband to this apt in hopes hed understand what I was going through. Doctor says I could have mild cataracts but hes not sure and brought up the words occular rosacea,no diagnosis though. Then he proceeds to tell me Im lucky because hes seen people with eyes 10 times worse then mine. I have like 3 eye conditions includeing dry eye. I asked how i was supposed to deal with the almost constant blurriness etc. His response was just forget about it. Omg. How? Its in front if me 24/7 he then proceeded to say he had to go see a sick person in the next room. Anyway, now ny husband thinks Im being a baby. Lots if friction in my marriage over this. None of the doctors Ive seen take this very seriously. It affects my entire life. Oh the opthamologist said he couldnt recommend any drops doesn't know how many times i should do compresses etc. I have to figure that out. No one here has the newest treatments,no one agrees on presciption dosages,or what drops to try. They dont even have up to date equipment to examine the tear film etc. I live a little over an hour friom Mayo clinic. Huge med facility. These clincs are affilated. Where is the technology? Can you tell Im frustrated, add depressed and anxiety filled also. Xx

This is why I hate Doctors and research reports....... they do not know how it will be,when they have dry eye or eye problems
                  Raw eating cures all deceases.
whole body cure is eye cure
FOOD (Natural, chemical free), Environment (air, water, noise), Relaxed Mind makes decease free

This is why I am clinging to my current GP even if she's technically not in my area: because she's not afraid to admit when she doesn't know something and call in a specialist (or in one instance drop a stinking note to a specialist who was dragging his feet). After years of bad experiences, now I finally have a good one I'm holding on to her!

For the quote for me it has to be the one that triggered all of this: "Do you know where the Moorfields is?" "Yes?" "Go there now." It was such a shock I'm not likely to forget it.

From specsavers- basically they kept giving me more eye drops not even suited to my problem. Also, being asked by family if ive tried this aka drops/fish oil/no computer and they don't understand the problem. Luckily now I'm getting on track of getting my mild mgd (which mind you, doesn't feel like it), apparently things are getting better so I'm glad of that.

oh, and you can just manage it.... Even thought you try your best not to cry every day and do everything you can in hope of relief which you haven't gotten any yet. From RAH- Giving me eye drops and I told her I already tried them to no avail. "What do you want me to do about it?" I felt like screaming at her.

Ophthalmologist who is now inexplicably a consultant "Why are you getting upset about it? My wife and I both have blepharitis and it isn't painful." After I'd told him it was very painful.

"You've tried everything by the looks of it, you come here every three months. What do you want me to do?" Random NHS Ophth.

"You'll live with this for the rest of your life. I expect you will get other symptoms as well as you seem to have Sjogrens and Hypothyroidism. You have very high expectations." 'Top' Moorfields consultant.

I've had that one from a specialist over a different condition. After six months of pain and hearing that rubbish I said, and I think I was remarkably restrained:
"Well if X isn't painful and I'm in here because of pain, either X isn't the issue or there are complications. So, what did you find?" (knowing he hadn't checked). It still took a GP and a surgical consultant chiming in to convince him to treat the actual issue.

A new quote from this morning, and the joys of NHS scheduling:
"So your next appointment will be in six months." err..no it won't. I have a bandage lens in that you need to check on in three weeks...
