They are both a bit messy to use - I agree.
I didn't find they helped me but I wouldn't say that they caused me any harm either. They are quite widely used - Lacrilube has been around for years. It's an ocular lubricant and often used after surgery.
I looked up Rohto on www.cosmeticsdatabase.com and I would be a little more concerned about using those.

Kim, you are going through a tough time, and this is all new to you. I can remember when i first started having problems almost 4 years ago now, the first thing i did was panic to the point, that i couldnt sit still, and sleeping was out of the question, my mind was in constant rage. Please try to relax a bit, ( i completely understand, that you may think, that is impossible) I have learned that the best way for me to deal with things is to take them one day at a time, today may not be that great, but maybe tomorrow will be better. If i sat here and wondered what my eyes are going to feel like in march, i would go crazy. Educate yourself on dry eye, do some looking around on this board, and you will learn alot. I was in the same boat as you, and this board has helped me more than any doctor could. I think i could become an eye doctor now, instead of a truck driver, and be making the big bucks, lol. A previous poster stated that you should read Dr. Latkaney's book. Dr Latkaney is a dry eye specialist in NYC, and his book will answer most all of your questions. I have a copy of the book, that i have read so many times, that i have it memorized. If you want to give me your address, i will gladly ship it out to you. I will cover the shipping cost for ya ( it sounds like you deserve a break) you can send me a private message if ya want, or you can call me personally, and i will try to help ya out. Rebecca, who is the genius behind this board, recently helped me out, and i feel inclined to pass along the generosity to someone in need. my number is 724 353 3016. hang in there, Ron

Kim,
I have not posted in a long time in this forum. I do not know your exact situation, but I consider myself to be a young person who was told they had dry eyes. Due to my nature, I read so much about dry eye that it increased my anxiety and caused me to be depressed. And yes, there was a period of time that I had thought that if I have to live with my eyes feeling like this then there would be no real purpose in life.
I am past that now. I only came back to this site to see how others were doing.
I became seriously dismayed when I went to doctors who either did not seem to care about what I was experiencing or didn't seem to know how to treat it. Also, the treatment they gave me never relieved the discomfort. My biggest question was, why did my eyes start bothering me? In the end, I had to answer that question myself. At the end of this I realized that the dry eye was just a symtom. I had issues in my life and in my health that I overlooked because they did not bother me or disrupt my life. What did disrupt my life was dry eye. I could not ignore that. When I stopped ignoring my health, I started to get better. You are young. That is good. That means you can turn this around and enjoy a fulfilling life.
I have been in the pit of despair. I would climb up, and sometimes fall back down. Please do not take what I am saying as "good for her" that will not be me. It really can be. Do not give up. If you feel you need to "traditional" doctors, please do. If you do not feel like you are getting a fix or feeling better, really look at your health and life style. Ask yourself is there room for improvement. I bet you will find that the answer is yes. Let me emphasize this. The body has an innate ability to want to be in balance and heal. It hates the way it is feeling as much as you do. If you give it the tools it needs, it will fix itself. Dr. Latkany in his book "The Dry Eye Remedy" has a chapter(s) on health. To me that is the most important chapter in his book. That is the cure. My point is do not ever lose hope, this is not a life long sentence. It will not get better overnight. But it can get better. Even after many years.

Do you think its abit extreme and misleading to say ''that is the cure''?
i have actually read ''reversing dry eye syndrome'' by ******, which contains alot of information too.
What I find concerning is that it constantly mentions how dry eye is chronic, that it can lead to blindness and damage if untreated, yet I do not feel I am geting the treatment I need. This makes me angry.
What does the chapter on health say?
I do exercise, try to eat well, and in general stay healthy. I think the biggest contributor to this was and still is going on the computer for hours day in day out.
Of course forums like this make me addicted and spend hours reading and writing. This is also how I got back problems.
I would like to see what would happen if I were to stay off the computer for 2 whole weeks. Even a day eases my back. Trouble is, I am addicted.
The other thing in the book I read is that there are so many simple things which can lead to dry eye yet once we get it, its irreversible!
There was no explanation why this is, except that changes occur.
So what hope is there? Its far easier for it to get worse than better?
I would like to know why it is worse during night?
why the pain can fluctuate from being uncomfortable to almost unnoticable within minutes? Why cleaning the lid margins and the exterior using soap, appeas to temporaily improve my discomfort?
Why my eyes itch (like a mosquito bite itch)?
Why I can keep my eyes open for about 15 seconds at best and why I can bearly keep them open for 2 to 3 seconds at worst?
This is called the 7 second test as mentioned in the book I read above.
Trouble is, I can pass the 7 second second test sometimes and other times I fail it, so it's incinclusive?
I dont have the energy to keep typing so I'd appreciate if people could answer my questions here.
many thanks.

Hi, Kim.
Trying to stay off of the computer for you sounds like a good thing to do. If you cannot stay off, limit your time to fifteen-minute intervals, and try one of Rebecca's Blinkers.
We have a founding member here, named Cindy, who still visits from time to time. Her posts have really helped me, but the reason that I mention her is that she discovered that computer use made her eyes feel worse, so she cut back for the sake of her eyes. There are some posts of hers where she discusses it, so it is good to consider limiting or modifying use.

Kim,
No I do not believe it is misleading to say that taking care of yourself is the cure. I do not believe that people who get dry eye were "destined" to get it. That from the day you were born you were on this path to get dry eye.
You mentioned that your eyes itch. My eyes also itched. Sometimes they still do, but it is getting more and more infrequent. Itching tends to be a sign of allergies. Allergies are a symptom of a comprised immune system. For whatever reason you can develop this in life due to stress, poor diet choices, a prolonged period of sickness, use of certain meds over a period of time, etc. But if you take care of yourself in the right way (this takes knowledge, not just what you think is the right way), you can undo what contributed to you developing allergies and dry eye. I never suffered from allergies before.
Dry eye is only chronic if you continue the same habits which led you to get it in the first place. Most people do, mainly because the healthcare system does not inform them on how to protect their health and provide their bodies with what they need for lasting health. Does that make sense?
I used to be addicted to this site, always trying to find somebody who had a similar story to mine. I did not get better until I got off this site and took my health into my own hands.
I went from having to put gooey stuff in my eyes nightly, using restasis, having plugs in my lower lids, eye drops, protective sleepwear, sleeping without my beloved fan running, couldn't stand windy days or hot days, thinking about going on anti-depressants, I sought counseling, and using nasal decongestants/antihistamines to nothing.
I chose not to let my condition be chronic. If you keep on thinking it is, it is easy to get depressed and discouraged.
Also, I thought I was healthy before I got this. I exercised and ate what I thought was good. I was still missing something though.
My point in telling you this is for you to recognize that you are still in control and can get better. Once I feel like all my issues have been resolved I do plan on contributing back to this forum on what I did.

people keep saying hang in there but i cannot hold on any longer.
Its just getting worse and worse. Its so dry and painful I cant get any relief.
and I have searched allover for eyedrops but I cant find ones which are preservative free and which are recommended on here without any side effects.
It wont get better will it on its own?
I feel that the only solution is to die. How long shall i put up with it? I am being tortured and I'm not getting the care I need.
eyedrops are not cheap either. I am unemployed and I can hardly afford to buy them.
I am suffering with tinnitus, depression, backpain, and other eye symptoms. The pain and suffering is endless. I dont get even a day off.
