  • Going on Disability?

Has anyone gone on either short term or long term disability at work because of their eye problems?

Has anyone been denied short term or long term disability?

If so please reply or PM me.

I have severe eye problems. I'm extremely sensative to light (one lightblub can cause me severe pain), I have moments of blindness when outside, I can't drive, I can't read (causes nausea), can't watch TV (also causes nausea), and I live in constant pain. But, when I took my last eye exam, my vision in low light was 20/25. I've worked from home for a year and half and I have no doubt that work is making my eyes worse.

I asked the Cornea Specialist/Eye Surgeon that I see about going on disability and he said that even with all my problems I wouldn't qualify because my sight is 20/25.

So I wanted to hear from others about their experiences.

I can't comment on your ability to get disability or not: but I will try to argue that pain affecting your ability to work is the only reason, out of those listed, not to be able to work.

Wear sunglasses- from a cheap 10$ pair, to NoIRs, to a pair of moisture chambers with custom lenses.

Find ways to read that are non-visual like audio or braille, both of which allow you to do computing work. Call vocational rehab about some of this, as well as local organizations serving or composed of blind people, like a lighthouse or an NFB chapter. someone close to you will be able to help you out.

Take the bus or train and if your town is too small to have that, call and find out if they have paratransit services. If they don't, ask if you can get taxi vouchers for commuting to work or jobhunting.

Not being able to make quality use of your sight right now is rendering you, functionally, like a blind person who is unwilling to explore the great big world outside their house.

It might feel safer and it's sure as hell easier but please remember that there's a whole big world outside. Give it a try.

I have other neurological conditions then eyes and am thinking of getting on disabilty though it is for my legs. Anyhow what I have found is this is hit or miss. Some people that I know with every problem in the book can't get it and then I have a friend who has mental disorder who has it. I am not sure but I would think you could try and it could not hurt and you may get it.
