  • Grasping at Straws?

My question may sound strange, but I am looking for anything that might indicate an etiology regarding my eye pain.

Has anyone ever seen any studies regarding the long-term use of underarm deodorants containing the active antiperspirant "Aluminum Zirconium Pentachlorohydrex GLY"?

I have recently started using deodorants without this ingredient just to be sure. I have had no positive results yet (with the Dry Eye)...but then again the damage may have already been done.

I also used to take "Rolaids" often for acid reflux, which also contained an aluminum ingredient. However, I quit using that many years ago.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Eyehurt, I had b. cancer 4 years ago just after diagnosis of Sjogrens.
I had surgery and radiation. During radiation, I could not use deodorant with this aluminum stuff in it. I went to a health food store and bought something called chrystal on the label.

I had dry eyes long before I used the new deodorant. After I stopped radiation and I tried going back to regular deodorant, I couldn't because it made me break out with itchy rash. So, I'm left using the chrysta deodorant.

Larry, I know what caused my dry eye which was Lasik, plus getting Sjogrens a bit later. I wanted to comment on your theory. I have no clue, but it was interesting I made this connection with my cancer treatment. Lucy

Thanks for your reply Lucy. I hope you are doing well with your recovery.

I have been concerned for a long time with the possible long-term effects of accepted ingredients in various products.

The cause(s) of my dry eye has not been determined after nearly 6 years of opthalmologists/specialists and recommended treatments. I have no known family history of dry eyes...no heart or pancreas disease. I am not taking any long-term meds...never had any eye injury or surgeries.

However, one of my eye docs finally had a ANA test run which is now pointing to possible Sjogrens. I have an appointment with a Rheumatologist in a couple of weeks...but the question still remains as to what caused this painful problem.

Just looking for some answers like most here on this forum. Thanks again.
